8 wedding trends for 2019 covering everything from the dress to décor

Dec 20 2018, 5:49 am

It’s prime engagement season and we’ve seen some massive moves in the wedding industry in 2018.

Most notably, when Meghan Markle walked down the aisle in the boatneck Givenchy dress that sent the world wild. Let’s not forget about her second, stunning, halter style dress by Stella McCartney.

Dresses are just one component of the biggest day of your life. We wanted to know the full scope so we sat down with Aly Armstrong, producer of Vancouver’s upcoming luxury wedding show Fleur.

Here’s a look at the top trends wedding expert Armstrong anticipates we’ll see in 2019.

Décor

There’s going to be a lot more colour coming through in 2019. “We’ll always have the classic looks, the pastels, and the more neutral colours, but I think people are getting bolder and I expect to see brighter and deeper colours going into 2019.” Armstrong also says that in the past two years, rose gold and copper have been popular colour schemes, but in 2019, she thinks we’re going back to the classic silver and gold.

Flowers

In terms of floral displays, 2018 was the year of “greenery.” If this is your vibe, don’t worry, we’re still going to be seeing greenery in 2019, but mixed in with that lush floral theme. The rustic mason jar trend is out for 2019, Armstrong believes it’s been done and “we’re going to see more floral being incorporated into the design.”

Food

Instead of the traditional buffet, we’re going to see more “interactive food stations.” This makes it a little more fun for guests and allows them to mix and mingle, get creative with the food stations, and sometimes the food stations can be tied in with the theme of the event. “For example, you could have a sushi station separate from a poutine station and you can really have fun with your meal.”

Dresses

Armstrong says she believes that Meghan Markle and Priyanka Chopra will “inspire the trends that we see coming forward in 2019.” Despite the emergence of dress styles made popular in 2018, the wedding expert says that brides “still want to see glamour incorporated into their dress.” Oversize bows and oversize bows leading into trains are also going to be a big trend for 2019.

“We’re also seeing a lot of sparkle and 3D floral applique on the gowns so people are still going very romantic and fairytale. There’s also been a resurgence of the tiara, so if you think about that, it’s got to play into what they’re wearing. The tiara is certainly something I think that a lot of brides will be wearing in 2019.”

Shoes

Brides are getting more fun and daring with their shoe choice for their big day. “I think that brides are getting a lot more fun with their shoes and we’re seeing a lot of colour and sparkle. It’s the one day that they can get away with wearing anything that they want. So if they’ve had their eye on that dream pair of shoes, that is the day to wear them. It allows for a fun pop of personality as well.”

Suits

“I love that we’re seeing emphasis put on the gentlemen. I think it’s also their time to shine so I’m seeing a lot of bespoke and custom suits,” says Armstrong. Interestingly, fun jacket interiors and designer suit liners with images or patterns are becoming more popular.

“I had one client this past September who had a custom suit but the inside was a country western pattern because he grew up in the countryside and he’s a cowboy at heart. Now he’s a Vancouver downtown professional so it very much blended his personality and he wore that proudly.”

Custom suits in different colours are also becoming more popular. “Grooms and groomsmen shouldn’t be afraid of mixing different colours. They don’t have to just always be in black so there’s some more creativity for them as well.”

Rings

When it comes to the ring, Armstrong relays that it’s ultimately a personal choice: “I believe that we’re always going to have couples that choose the classic solitaire diamond. I don’t think we’re going to see that go away but what we are seeing is bit more creativity and incorporating gemstones. It’s such a personal decision and each individual needs to ensure that it’s something they’re going to love for the rest of their life so I really encourage all of my couples to go with something that they feel represents not only themselves, but them as a couple.”

Budgets

The topic of budgets is one that Armstrong feels is difficult because “a lot of articles that exist on American magazines and blogs often say that the average budget is $30,000 for a wedding, but in reality, if you’re getting married at a venue such as a hotel where their catering team is handling food and beverage, then you have to pay those rates.”

If you want to get married in Vancouver at a hotel or venue that has in-house catering, Armstrong says you’re looking to spend between $50,000 to $75,000 minimum, for a wedding that includes flowers and décor. To be safe, Armstrong recommends budgeting for $150 per person for food and beverage and to take it from there.
