Walmart Canada will be closing six stores across the country and spending $500 million to upgrade others as part of ongoing efforts to modernize its business.
The company announced the closures on March 15 but did not specify when the stores would be shutting down.
Within Ontario, the Malton Supercentre in Mississauga, County Fair store in Hamilton, and the Kitchener East store will close.
The Deer Valley store in Calgary, Alberta, and the Abbotsfield Supercentre in Edmonton, Alberta, will shut down.
Also set to close is the St. John’s South store in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
The company said the stores slated for closure are all in areas that are “well served” by their other locations, and affected employees will be offered positions at nearby Walmart’s.
“We are on a mission to modernize all aspects of our business, and that includes our stores,” said Horacio Barbeito, president and CEO of Walmart Canada.
“Investing in our stores is a major priority. In so many cases, our stores are pillars in the community, and we want them at their best – especially as we serve our customers in more omnichannel ways.”

The company said the $500 million investment would “refurbish” and “refresh” its remaining stores and help to improve the “overall customer experience.”
Some of the planned changes include upgrading the “look and feel” of Supercentre stores with paint, new signs, and improved lighting.
Stores with the highest e-commerce volume will see an improved picking space for online orders, and other locations will see a “revamped” layout.
Walmart Canada said these updates are the latest in a five-year plan that is focused on making its online and in-store shopping experience “simpler, faster and more convenient.”
