Toronto flight diverted over unruly passenger making 'odd' noises and vaping

An international flight out of Toronto had to make an emergency stop in Newfoundland on Sunday because of an unruly passenger.

The flight was bound for Switzerland before the plane had to make an emergency landing at St. John’s International Airport because of an intoxicated and disruptive flyer.

Police arrested Ahmed Khassim, the 29-year-old man who allegedly caused the disturbance. Once the passenger was removed, the flight continued onwards towards Zurich about two-and-a-half hours later.

According to Newfoundland Police, the unruly passenger on the Air Canada flight was playing music loudly, making “odd” noises, demanded to be served alcohol and was disrespectful towards flight attendants and the plane’s pilot when asked to calm down.

Once the man started vaping an e-cigarette, the aircraft spun around at the tip of the Atlantic Ocean and made the 35 minute detour to St. John’s.

According to Air Canada, the plane refuelled and continued to Zurich. Its remaining 287 passengers landed in Switzerland roughly three hours behind schedule.

Khassim appeared in court on Monday morning and faces charges under the Aeronautics Act for allegedly engaging in behaviour that endangers passengers and staff on a flight.
