Sony's PlayStation 5 launch date and pricing details announced

On Wednesday afternoon, Sony shared the details, pricing, and release date of the highly anticipated PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition.

The design of Sony’s latest console was first shared in early June. Details had been scarce until then, with the only reveal having been the design of the PS5 controller back in April.

Now, the next-generation consoles have been confirmed to release in early November. On November 12, the PS5 will be launch in seven markets — the United States, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea.

Sony will continue with a full global launch on November 19, with launches in Europe, the Middle East, South America, Asia, and South Africa.

A key difference between the two models is that the standard version of the Playstation 5 includes a disk-drive, while the Digital Edition will feature download-only gaming. With extensively designed hard-drive upgrades, this is the first time in gaming history that a digital-only console is available at launch.

“Whichever PS5 you chose, you’ll enjoy the same breathtaking, next-gen gaming experiences,” wrote Sony President and CEO Jim Ryan in a statement.

The two models will share similar features such as the same custom processor CPU and GPU, 4k graphics and ray-tracing support, ultra-high-speed SSD with integrated I/, and 3D audio and the DualSense Wireless Controller.

Sony says that the PS5 Digital Edition will cost $499.99, while the standard edition will cost $629.99. Pre-orders will begin starting Thursday at select retailers.

Sony says that these titles will be priced between $49.99 and $69.99 (USD).
