The Toronto Raptors’ stellar performance this year has cost McDonald’s over $5 million in free french fries, in the regular season alone.

How does this add up?

In October 2018, McDonald’s introduced a new deal offering customers a free medium fries every time the Raptors score 12 or more three-pointers in a game this season.

The Raptors have come a long way since October, scoring a lot of three-pointers, and now team just needs two more wins against the Golden State Warriors to claim the NBA Championship trophy.

According to the Financial Post, McDonald’s initially predicted that the Raptors would make at least 12 three-pointers in half of the regular season’s 82 games.

In July 2018, the Raptors traded All-Star forward DeMar DeRozan to the San Antonio Spurs for Kawhi Leonard. McDonald’s had the opportunity to tweak its free-fries deal before the season started in October but decided not to.

In the 2018-2019 regular season, the Raptors scored 12 three-pointers 44 times, and an additional 10 times in their playoff run.

The Financial Post points out that McDonald’s didn’t necessarily underestimate the Raptors’ ability to score threes — but definitely did not predict how many Ontarians would participate in the deal.

The regular season saw two-million free orders, tallying up to nearly $5.8 million worth of fries.

In Game 1 of the NBA Finals, McDonald’s fried up 80,000 free orders of fries after the Raptors scored 13 threes.

However, McDonald’s may not be seeing the uptick in free fries giveaways as a negative. Customers must download the McDonald’s app to cash in on their free fries, meaning the deal is attracting even more customers to the fast food giant.
