The NHL has joined the fight to stop the spread of COVID-19.

The league announced today that it has begun selling team-branded face masks, available for purchase on NHLShop.com. They come in packs of three, each with a different design of one of the NHL’s 31 teams, for USD $24.99. The league’s proceeds are going to support the Feeding America and Food Banks Canada COVID-19 response funds.

The move is not unprecedented, as the NBA began selling team-branded masks 11 days ago. The Vancouver Whitecaps began selling masks on Friday, raising over a million dollars in just three days, with net proceeds benefitting the city’s aquarium that is in danger of permanent closure.

The NHL said in a media release that their masks are intended for personal use, in keeping with the recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Health Canada regarding the use of cloth face coverings in public settings as a step to limit community spread of coronavirus.

The masks are intended for personal use, and are not a replacement for medical-grade personal protective equipment, the league said. The NHL adds that the coverings are just one of the ways to limit community spread of the virus, in addition to washing your hands often, social distancing, and avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

“The health, well-being and safety of our fans and all communities across Canada, the United States and around the world, is our number one priority,” said Kim Davis, NHL EVP, Social Impact, Growth Initiatives & Legislative Affairs. “We’re committed to assisting in the effort to support the face covering guidelines from the CDC and Health Canada with the important benefit and outcome of helping food banks across the US and Canada in their efforts to feed people in need during this unprecedented time.”
