10 new movies coming to theatres in April

In case you are tired of sitting at home watching Netflix, head on over to a theatre this April. This month features a plethora of movies for all tastes with plenty of horror, comedy, and action to go around.

April’s highlights include John Cena being an over protective parent, Emily Blunt in one of the scariest films you will see in years, and of course the long-awaited Marvel film looking to Hulk smash the box office. Let’s not forget about April 20 which is well represented with a sequel to one of the best stoner films ever made.

So, get your munchies ready, grab your best mate, and head on over to your local theatre and check out a few of these beauties below.

Blockers

Three parents (John Cena, Leslie Mann and Ike Barinholtz) find out that their daughters’ have a pact to lose their virginity at prom, so they go undercover for a one-night operation to stop their kids from sealing the deal. Early reviews have been positive calling it fun and chock full of smart humor.

A Quiet Place

Blind creatures come to Earth and hunt humans by sound. A farm family of four create a way to live without making any noise but how long can they survive in total silence? John Krasinski stars in and directs this horror film that critics are already calling one of the scariest in years.

Borg vs McEnroe

Relive one of the greatest rivalries in sports as Sweden’s Bjorn Borg (Sverrir Gudnason) takes on temperamental New Yorker John McEnroe (Shia LaBeouf), in one of the most suspenseful events in tennis history. This movie did the film festival circuit last year to positive reviews including a ton of praise for Shia LaBeouf.

Rampage

Remember the video game by Midway Games? Now it’s coming to the big screen and starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Everything about this movie is big, especially the  genetically altered monsters – like the silverback Gorilla named George.

Having taken care of George since he was little, Primatologist Davis Okoye (Johnson) must now try and stop his monster guerilla friend and other mutated beasts from destroying the city. For those of you who enjoy overly expensive B-Films, this one is for you.

Lean on Pete

Start massaging your tear ducts now because this looks like a movie that could most definitely affect your allergies. If you’re the reading type, this film is also based on a book by Andrew Haigh. Even the synopsis of a teenage boy trying to save an aging racehorse from being slaughtered is tear-inducing.

The movie boasts a solid cast in Charlie Plummer, Travis Fimmel, Chloe Sevigny, Steve Zahn and Steve Buscemi. The early buzz on this film has been great but it’s only opening in limited release across the country, so keep an eye out as it opens at various dates throughout April.

You Were Never Really Here

Joe (Joaquin Phoenix) is a traumatized veteran, unafraid of violence, who tracks down missing girls for a living. When one of his jobs goes sideways, Joe uncovers a conspiracy that puts his life in jeopardy. Critics are already raving about this film calling it gripping and dark, with a standout performance by Phoenix.

Super Troopers 2

Of course, this film is opening on 4/20, we wouldn’t expect anything else. This is a sequel to a film considered to be one of the greatest stoner films ever made. Directed by Jay Chandrasekhar and written by the Broken Lizard comedy team, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske, Super Troopers 2 sends our favourite Highway Patrol officers to set up shop where the border is being disputed between Canadian and US officials.

Tully

From the director of Juno comes another character piece starring Charlize Theron. The story is about a woman named Marlo (Theron) who has to deal with two young children and a newborn baby. Overwhelmed by the seemingly endless chores that go along with being a wife and mom, Marlo decides to hire a nanny named Tully (Mackenzie Davis), who not only takes care of the kids, but of Marlo too.

The film is supposedly both funny and heartfelt with standout performances by Theron and Davis. It’s a great film about motherhood that lets other moms know the struggle is real.

I Feel Pretty

Cast:  Amy Schumer, Michelle Williams, Emily Ratajkowski
Director: Abby Kohn, Marc Silverstein

Renee Bennett (Amy Schumer) works for a cosmetics company where she’s surrounded by beautiful people. Obviously, she feels a tad average in comparison but after she hits her head, she starts to believe that she is drop-dead gorgeous. While others may not see what she sees, her new found confidence provides her with renewed opportunities at her job and in her love life.

Schumer brings a lot of the self-deprecating humour normally seen in her standup to the big screen in a film that looks funny and heartfelt.

Avengers: Infinity War

Finally we get The Avengers teaming up with their Marvel superhero allies to take on the powerful Thanos as he tries to collect all of the Infinity Stones and use them to destroy the Universe. This will no doubt be one of the biggest blockbusters of the year and should give Marvel fans a film worth remembering.
