These are the top 10 most popular dog breeds in Canada
The people have spoken… and they really like dogs.
The Canadian Kennel Club (CKC), Canada’s primary registry for purebred dogs, has released its annual list of the 10 most popular dog breeds in Canada — and there’s a newbie on the list.
The list of top dogs, which looks at 2018 ownership statistics, puts the loveable Labrador Retriever as the top dog in the country. The breed has been leading the pack for an impressive two decades, says the CKC.

Close on its tail are the German Shepherd, in second place, and Golden Retriever, in third. The poodle took the fourth spot. These top four rankings haven’t changed in the past six years.
What will come as no surprise to people living in Canadian cities, the French Bulldog — commonly termed “Frenchies” — have muscled their way into the fifth spot on the top 10 list.
David Berrey, president of French Bulldog Fanciers of Canada, said in a statement the increasing popularity of the breed can be attributed to their small stature but hearty attitude, making them perfect for city living AND hitting the trails on the weekends.
“The French Bulldog is comical, entertaining and dependably amiable. French Bulldogs are the smallest things to take up the most space in your heart and fills an emptiness you didn’t even know you had,” Berrey said.
This year’s new addition is the Portuguese Water Dog, just barely sneaking by the Miniature Schnauzer to capture the 10th and final spot on the list. It’s the first time in CKC records the Portuguese Water Dog has been featured on the top 10 list.
The working-dog breed has shot into popularity recently after the addition of a PWD puppy into the household of former US President Barack Obama.
“Portuguese Water Dogs are known for their stamina and intelligence, as well as being affectionate, loyal family members,” says the CKC.
