Calgary police have laid charges following the discovery of what they believe to be the bodies of missing 25-year-old Jasmine Lovett and her one-year-old daughter, Aliyah Sanderson.

The two were last seen on April 16, and after an extensive, weeks-long search, two bodies were found near Grizzly Creek off Highway 40 on Monday.

A man was taken into custody shortly after the bodies were found, and the Calgary Police Service stated in a Tuesday morning release that 34-year-old Roberts Leeming has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder.

Leeming is next expected to appear in court on Tuesday, May 14.

The autopsies of the two bodies are ongoing, according to the release, and it is stated that, while the official identification of the victims will be released, the causes of death will not.

The Lovett family released a statement on Monday shortly after the bodies were found, thanking the Calgary Police Service and the public for the work that was done in the search.

“Our family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the entire Calgary Police Service as well as those who have worked diligently in the search for Jasmine and her baby girl Aliyah,” the family’s statement reads.

“We would also like to thank the public for their continued support which has meant a great deal to us. Our lives have been devastated and our hearts are heavy. We are trying to understand how this tragedy could have happened to our loved ones.”

A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist the victims’ family with funeral expenses.
