Loblaws planning to sell recreational cannabis on the east coast

Canadians could one day re-up while shopping for milk and eggs if Loblaw gets into the business of retailing recreational cannabis.

In Atlantic Canada, 10 stores owned by the grocery giant have been named among the qualified applicants to sell recreational cannabis.

“While people might imagine recreational cannabis on our grocery shelves in Newfoundland and Labrador, this is not our plan,” shared Mark Boudreau, Director, Corporate Affairs for Loblaw Atlantic in a statement to Daily Hive before adding that cannabis “would be available behind the counter, in small, existing tobacco shops, adjacent but separate to our Dominion grocery stores.”

Currently, Loblaw-owned chain of pharmacies Shoppers Drug Mart is angling to distribute medical cannabis which remains the company’s primary focus.

Loblaw locations in Newfoundland and Labrador might be alone in offering recreational cannabis… for the time being anyway. Boudreau notes that “at this time we have no other active applications for recreational cannabis, and we don’t want to speculate.”
