Westjet flights from Canada to Hawaii cancelled due to Hurricane Lane

After a travel warning to Hawaii was issued due to Hurricane Lane, multiple flights out of Vancouver and Alberta to the Hawaiian Islands have also been cancelled.

Vancouver’s YVR is the main hub for Canadian flights from cities like Toronto before crossing the Pacific to the island state.

As explained in the federal government’s travel advisory, Hurricane Lane is expected to pass near the Islands on August 23 and 24.

Excessive rainfall and violent winds are expected to be a by-product of the hurricane, as mentioned in the advisory.

For the safety of guests and flight crews, WestJet has cancelled all regularly scheduled flights in and out of Hawaii from now until August 24.

According to WestJet media spokesperson, Lauren Stewart, “[they] are not taking any more guests in-bound to Hawaii.”

She shared that the airlines will be operating two non-scheduled recovery flights out of Hawaii – one from Honolulu and one from Maui.

“Westjet is in the process of contacting guests who were to fly out of both islands this evening to let them know that an earlier departure has been scheduled on the recovery flight,” Lauren explains.

“Guests from Friday’s flights are also being contacted and will be rebooked on extra flight segments this weekend… post-hurricane.”

Current flight cancellations include:

August 23:

  • WS1864 from Vancouver to Honolulu
  • WS1865 from Honolulu to Vancouver
  • WS1852 from Vancouver to Kahului
  • WS1853 from Kahului to Vancouver

August 24:

  • WS1864 from Vancouver to Honolulu
  • WS1865 from Honolulu to Vancouver
  • WS1852 from Vancouver to Kahului
  • WS1853 from Kahului to Vancouver

The situation has been described as extremely fluid and officials are continuing to monitor Hurricane Lane’s path.
