A child has died following a “tragic accident” involving a Peloton treadmill.

The company’s CEO and co-founder, John Foley, revealed the death in a letter addressed to owners of the Tread+ treadmill on March 18.

“I recently learned about a tragic accident involving a child and the Tread+, resulting in, unthinkably, a death,” Foley said.

“While we are aware of only a small handful of incidents involving the Tread+ where children have been hurt, each one is devastating to all of us at Peloton, and our hearts go out to the families involved.”

Foley did not specify how the child died, or where the incident occurred.

He said that no additional details would be provided regarding the accidents, out of respect for the affected families and their privacy.

Foley asked Peloton owners to keep children and pets away from the company’s exercise equipment “at all times.”

The letter cautions that before beginning a workout, users should check to make sure that the space around their Peloton equipment is clear.

When a workout is finished, the key of the Tread+ should be removed and stored out of reach of children.

According to Peloton’s website, the 132-kilogram Tread+ treadmills are made mostly of carbon steel.

The rotating belt is made of woven nylon with a textured PVC top, and it can reach speeds of over 19 kilometres per hour.

“We are always looking for new ways to ensure that you have the best experience with our products,” Foley said.

“We are currently assessing ways to reinforce our warnings about these critical safety precautions to hopefully prevent future accidents.”
