Canadian Women's March organizers launch March On Canada for Canada 150

The organizers of the Canadian Women’s March want to increase the representation of women in public spaces across Canada – and they want your help to do it.

March On Canada and grassroots initiative Completing The Story are teaming up to tell the stories of women who built communities across Canada ahead of our 150th birthday.

Formed in 2017, March On Canada is an initiative created by the Canadian Women’s March organizers, who marched in solidarity with American women earlier this year.

The group is a continuation of the International Women’s March, which took place in January, as a protest against the misogyny seen in the US election campaign.

Completing the Story began in Edmonton in 2016, when a group of women came together with the goal to increase visual representation of women in public spaces.

The group has expanded and in doing so, has reached out to elected representatives and other women’s groups to make women’s representation a priority.

March on Canada and Completing the Story are asking people from across the country to post photos to their social media accounts of statues, plaques, murals, memorials, schools, street names, or any other public spaces where women’s representation is missing, along with the hashtag #CompletingTheStory.

“The need for women to be visually represented in public spaces is a national concern. My fellow Sister March Organizers in other cities are reaching out to encourage people to observe, post, and act when it comes to recognizing women in leadership in a visual way,” said Paula Kirman, organizer of the March On Edmonton Collective.

“Leadership goes beyond people in elected office. It also includes community leaders in a variety of roles.”
