With a growing amount of people gravitating towards a healthier, more balanced diet, 2019 is set to be a big year for plant-based eating. Foods like tahini, seaweed, tofu, and seitan will all be on the rise, with demand for “healthier” grub crossing over into the delivery space, too. With veggie-rich cuisines no longer geared solely for vegetarians or vegans, the rise of the Pegan diet (a cross-over between Paleo and Vegan) will also take center stage, with more and more meat-eaters looking for new and creative ways to inject plant-based foods in their routines.

With marijuana legalization now official in Canada, you’re definitely going to start seeing more use of the plant in cuisine. While pot-infused edibles are not yet legal to buy commercially, consumers will likely be seeing a wider-spread use of cannabis in at-home cooking, infused in everything from recipes for baked goods, gummy bears to salad dressings.

Green tea is officially cool again, with 2019 likely to see a peak in consumer demand for this antioxidant-rich super-drink. Packed with a plethora of health benefits, including doing a whole bunch of good for your digestive and cardiovascular system, this category of tea has seemingly endless varieties to explore. Expect to see a lot more of the green stuff in cafes and store shelves, with everything from HĹŤjicha, Genmaicha, Sencha to Gyokuro popping up in loose form, or in pre-brewed, ready-to-enjoy formats.

With our constant quest to hydrate ourselves adequately and cut down on processed sugar, combined with the desire to save the planet from our excessive food waste – it’s really no surprise that infused water is slated for a big popularity boost next year. Refreshing, pretty to look at and super simple to prepare, anticipate seeing fruit, veggie scraps, herbs and even spices making cameos in your H20, with this spa-inspired trend showing up everywhere from blogs, cafes to trendy eateries.

All that’s old is new again! Pinterest recently reported a huge spike in searches for all things slow-cooker related, and with the intense popularity of all-in-one appliances like the Instant Pot, is it really any surprise? We’re all busy, and looking for ways to save time and still put a nice meal on the table for our family – hence this retro gadget’s real-life appeal. Expect to see more slow-cooked comfort foods in the hot seat this next year. Think hearty stews, chilis, and soups. For many dedicated home cooks, this has long been a kitchen tool worth its weight in gold, but like most things from the 1970s, it’s back for another run.
