A look inside: Vancouver’s Rosemary Rocksalt bagelry

Mar 28 2019, 7:05 am

It’s an age-old, divisive question: New York-style bagels, or Montreal-style bagels?

While the debate rages on, we have a feeling you’ll be #TeamMontreal once you’ve tried the bagels, Montreal-style, at Rosemary Rocksalt. Let’s take a look inside the Vancouver bakery that has been making the best bagels, Montreal-style, in town since 2012.

Rosemary Rocksalt begins by crafting every single bagel by hand, boiling the dough in honey water, yielding a sweet, chewy bagel with a larger hole. Each bagel is smothered in the best locally-sourced ingredients and baked in an open hearth oven, resulting in a crisp, golden brown bagel.

A step inside the store is an assault for the senses, with the scent of Rosemary Rocksalt’s freshly baked bagels an indescribable feeling. Let’s just say, you won’t be able to walk in the store without walking out with one of their goods. Or two. Or a dozen.

There’s an extensive menu, too, so you’re spoiled for choices. Pop in for a hearty breakfast bagel and grab the popular “Whistler,” packed with smoked meat, egg, cheddar, green peppers, tomato, lettuce, red onion, and house-made cream cheese. Or, go for a classic and try the “Steveston,” loaded with wild BC smoked sockeye salmon, red onions, capers, and house-made cream cheese.

Those with dietary restrictions shouldn’t feel left out, either. With almost gluten-free bagels and vegetarian options available, and a variety of spreads, guests have raved about the selection at Rosemary Rocksalt.

The bagelry offers catering options and online delivery for Vancouverites through services including Skip The Dishes, Foodora, and Foodee, or even their own delivery service, when available (just give the store a call to enquire). Out of towners — a trip to Vancouver is only a few clicks away, now that we’ve found your (bagel-icious) reason to go.

“We believe that the world is changing fast, but our bagels never will,” Teena Gupta, CEO of Rosemary Rocksalt says. Makes sense to us.
