FIFA World Cup 2026 will make history in a number of ways.

The largest World Cup ever, a record 48 countries will participate, up from 32. And for the first time ever, the men’s World Cup has three host countries: Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

The tournament will take place from June 11 to July 19 in 16 host cities, including the Canadian host cities of Vancouver and Toronto.

But the FIFA World Cup isn’t just a one-month event. It includes a years-long qualifying process that came to an end on Tuesday.

A total of 48 countries have qualified, including 16 from Europe, six from North America, six from South America, nine from Asia, 10 from Africa, and one from Oceania.

Here are the countries that will be competing at the FIFA World Cup.

EUROPE (16)

Sixteen members of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) have qualified, and somehow, four-time FIFA World Cup champion Italy isn’t one of them. No. 20-ranked Denmark was also upset in the final round of qualifying and won’t be coming to North America.

Remarkably, Italy will miss the men’s World Cup for a third straight time, after being upset by Bosnia and Herzegovina. Sweden, Türkiye, and Czechia were also among the last four European countries to qualify.

Qualified UEFA countries:

1. England
2. France
3. Croatia
4. Portugal
5. Norway
6. Germany
7. Netherlands
8. Belgium
9. Austria
10. Switzerland
11. Spain
12. Scotland
13. Sweden
14. Türkiye
15. Czechia
16. Bosnia and Herzegovina

NORTH AMERICA, CENTRAL AMERICA, CARIBBEAN (6)

The Confederation of North, Central America, and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf) is sending six countries to the World Cup.

As host nations, Canada, the United States, and Mexico qualify automatically. Three more Concacaf countries have secured their spots, including two surprise teams making it.

Panama, who last made it to the World Cup in 2018, was expected to qualify. Haiti and Curaçao are the surprises.

Things are so dire in Haiti that its national team is currently unable to play matches at home. And with a population of just 158,665, Curaçao is the smallest country ever to qualify for a FIFA World Cup.

Qualified Concacaf countries:

1. Canada
2. United States
3. Mexico
4. Panama
5. Haiti
6. Curaçao

SOUTH AMERICA (6)

The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) is sending six countries to the FIFA World Cup.

Lionel Messi and the defending champions from Argentina will be there. So will Brazil, Ecuador, and Uruguay, just as they were in 2022.

Colombia is making its first appearance since 2018, while Paraguay returns to the men’s World Cup for the first time since 2010.

Qualified CONMEBOL countries:

1. Argentina
2. Brazil
3. Ecuador
4. Colombia
5. Uruguay
6. Paraguay

ASIA (9)

The Asian Football Confederation is sending nine countries to the FIFA World Cup: Japan, Iran, South Korea, Australia, Uzbekistan, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Iraq.

Uzbekistan and Jordan will compete at the FIFA World Cup for the first time.

Australia, which moved to the Asian Football Confederation from Oceania in 2006, will make its sixth straight World Cup appearance.

Qualified Asian Football Confederation countries:

1. Japan
2. Iran
3. Uzbekistan
4. Jordan
5. South Korea
6. Australia
7. Saudi Arabia
8. Qatar
9. Iraq

AFRICA (10)

Ten African nations are headed to the World Cup: Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, Ghana, Cape Verde, South Africa, Senegal, Côte D’Ivoire, and Congo DR.

Morocco achieved the best-ever result by an African country at the 2022 World Cup, finishing fourth.

On the opposite end of the spectrum is Cape Verde, a tiny island nation off the coast of West Africa, with a population under 600,000. Their national team is going to its first FIFA World Cup.

Congo DR was one of the last teams to qualify. It marks the country’s first trip to the FIFA World Cup since 1974, when it was known as Zaire.

Qualified Confederation of African Football countries:

1. Morocco
2. Tunisia
3. Egypt
4. Algeria
5. Ghana
6. Cape Verde
7. South Africa
8. Côte d’Ivoire
9. Senegal
10. Congo DR

OCEANIA (1)

New Zealand was the second nation (outside of the host countries) to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, doing so from the Oceania Football Confederation.

This is the first time Oceania has been guaranteed an automatic berth in a men’s World Cup. New Zealand was the heavy favourite to advance, given that Australia now competes in the Asian Football Confederation.

Canadian figure skating star overcame cancer en route to long-awaited Olympic medal

On a Wednesday in Milan, a pair of Canadian Olympic figure skating stars finally got their long-awaited medal.

Ice dancers Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier, competing in their third Olympic Games together, managed to land on the podium with a bronze medal, the first of their respective careers.

In the “Starry Night” themed outfits and dancing to the song “Vincent,” the duo put up a performance for the ages, finishing third behind duos representing the United States and France.

But back in 2023, Gilles had a medical scare that could’ve ended her career abruptly: a bout with ovarian cancer. Though she’s now cancer-free, she admits that the doubts crept in about whether it could be the end of her athletic career.

“It’s like, ‘Am I gonna have to stop skating? Am I going to have to go through chemo?’ There was so much unknown,” she said in the Netflix documentary Glitter & Gold: Ice Dancing. “I was lucky enough to just have surgery, like, we didn’t know how bad it was because it was a nine-centimetre cyst with the tumour, I believed, attached to it… It took about two and a half years for me to feel like myself.”

Gilles has also mentioned many times in the media how the passing of her mom in 2018 has pushed her just that much more to keep skating at a high level.

“In those moments, you don’t really realize how strong you are, and I’m just so proud of any of the hurdles that have been put in front of me,” Gilles said to fellow Canadian Olympic star Tessa Virtue in a recent sitdown for CBC.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE CANADIAN OLYMPIC FIGURE SKATING STARS?

Following their ice dance performance in Milan — which very well could be the final one of their career on the world stage — both partners were visibly overcome with emotion.

“Seeing Paul get super emotional, like that doesn’t happen often,” said Gilles following the skate, per the COC. “But again, that’s what it takes to have an Olympic moment like that.

“We just let it all out, and to be able to finish like that, we’re just so unbelievably proud of what we’ve accomplished, I guess.”

Both 34 years old, the duo have skated together since 2011. Gilles, who was born in Illinois to a Canadian mother, actually previously competed for the United States with partners Zachary Donohue and Timothy McKernan.

Poirier, meanwhile, competed alongside Vanessa Crone for the first decade of his career, which included a home appearance at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Given that they’ll be 38 at the next Olympic Games (and that they were the second-oldest pairing in the Olympic field), age would suggest that competitive retirement could be in the duo’s near future.

For now, though, they’ll be able to bask in the glory of finally achieving a lifelong dream.

Olympic legend Scott Moir coaching both Canada and USA in same event

For many Canadians, there’s not much debate about who the most legendary Olympic duo of their lifetime is.

Ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, who won five medals (including two golds) across three Olympic Games from 2010 to 2018, serve as an unparalleled partnership in the country’s sporting lore, and one that transcended the world of figure skating.

But after their retirement in 2019, many came to wonder if we’d ever see anything like them again.

Now, half of the iconic duo is trying to find that answer out directly.

WHY IS SCOTT MOIR BACK AT THE OLYMPICS?

Now a skating coach, Moir is back at the Winter Olympics this year, although he isn’t exactly just pledging allegiance to Canada.

Moir, who is the managing director of the Ice Academy of Montreal campus in Southwestern Ontario, works with a whole host of skaters looking to realize their Olympic dreams.

And at Monday’s ice dance event in Milan, he was spotted wearing both the Canadian and American team outfits while supporting his teams. For the Americans, he’s teamed up with Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenko, while he’s working with Marie-Jade Lauriault and Romain Le Gac in his home country.

> Scott Moir is at his first Olympics as a coach, and as expected, he's wearing the colours of each country in kiss and cry.

In any other sporting competition, it wouldn’t look weird for a coach born in a different country to work with athletes of a different nationality.

For example, every Stanley Cup-winning coach since 2018 (and many more before that) has been a Canadian coach on an American team, and nobody thinks twice about that discrepancy. We will admit, though, that coaching two countries during the same event is a little bit confusing.

“I’m just honoured to be part of it as a coach, just to be there to support my athletes is going to be huge honour for me,” Moir said in a recent interview with CP24 alongside Virtue.

Moir’s vast experience in the skating world should be a big asset to his athletes, especially when explaining how to deal with the pressure of a massive Olympic spotlight.

“They have worked tirelessly for years, sometimes decades, to get to this one moment and skating. It’s just mere minutes on the ice when everything is on the line,” Virtue added.

WHAT IS TESSA VIRTUE UP TO?

Virtue is long retired from the skating world and has transitioned into a new career with Deloitte as an executive advisor.

But while she’s still rooting for Canadian athletes from afar, she also has a bit of a soft spot for her skating partner of more than two decades.

“I’m cheering for the coach now,” Virtue told CP24. “I’m cheering for the guy at the boards putting out the teams to skate. I’m so proud of Scott.”

The duo haven’t skated together formally since their retirement, despite many pushes for them to get back out on the ice.

Canadian Olympic dad has teary-eyed reaction in impromptu interview

When CBC Olympics reporter Ariel Helwani took to the streets of Livigno, Italy looking for interviews, he probably wasn’t expecting one as emotional as he ended up with.

Helwani, best known in the non-Olympic world as an MMA reporter, was perusing the streets chatting with fans when he stumbled upon a group of Canadian fans.

And it turns out that among them was first-time Canadian Olympic freestyle skier Maïa Schwinghammer’s dad, Rick.

> Get your tissues ready 🥹
>
> While doing interviews in the streets of Livigno, @arielhelwani finds Maïa Schwinghammer's dad, who cries talking about watching his daughter compete at #MilanoCortina2026#WinterOlympicsToday presented by @AirCanada pic.twitter.com/KSAIZXzDDB
>
> — CBC Olympics (@CBCOlympics) February 8, 2026

After figuring out who he was, Helwani asked the proud father to try to explain his feelings on seeing his daughter compete on the world stage.

“It’s hard to say,” Schwinghammer said. “Gets you all emotional, but it’s so fun to be here. It’s awesome.”

And while winning an Olympic medal is the goal of pretty much any athlete competing, that isn’t necessarily the same for their parents.

“She’s doing great. We decided that she’s done so well, and she’s already, at the top, made it here just great,” Schwinghammer said.

In the middle of the chat, a few tears were shed.

“This is real, right here?” Helwani asked about Schwinghammer’s emotions.

“Oui,” he said with a smile.

“From one dad to another, I understand,” Helwani replied.

The elder Schwinghammer himself was a World Cup-level freestyle skier, no doubt inspiring his daughter’s passion for the sport. Given that she grew up a notoriously flat part of Canada in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, having a supportive family would’ve been paramount to reaching the top levels of the sport.

But despite being so choked up about the whole experience, the emotional father didn’t quite want to chock it up to his own parenting.

“I guess her mom taught her good things,” Schwinghammer said about how his daughter made her way to the Olympics.

“Take some credit,” Helwani said with a laugh.

Schwinghammer competes in the moguls event taking place Feb. 10 and 11.

For most people attending the Olympics, finding the perfect seat at the venue is probably the least of their concerns.

If you ever get offered a chance to go to the world’s most iconic sporting event, you probably won’t spend too much time worrying if you’re in the first or last row, as long as you’re in the venue.

But for one Canadian coach, his seat at the Stelvio Alpine Skiing Centre probably wasn’t exactly the most comfortable for a few other reasons.

Conrad Pridy, officially listed as a “speed assistant coach and strength and conditioning lead” of the Alpine Canada men’s team, opted to climb a tree for better view of Saturday’s men’s downhill race at the Winter Olympics.

> Coaches are committed🫡 pic.twitter.com/DAmJf2lW47
>
> — CBC Olympics (@CBCOlympics) February 7, 2026

Yes, seriously, with the CBC broadcast explaining that he’s looking for the best vantage point at the bottom of the hill to offer feedback and video to the Canadian skiiers for advice on their next runs on the mountain.

Pridy himself doesn’t exactly seem like a man who’s afraid of a little danger. His Instagram profile is filled with skiing and mountain biking videos, dealing with all sorts of slopes. Though he last raced on the FIS circuit in 2015, it seems like he’s still not afraid to risk an injury for the better of Canada’s medal hopes.

We didn’t get any footage of Pridy climbing down from the tree, so we can only hope he had a safe recovery. And perhaps for the next Olympics, they’d consider bringing in a couple temporary towers or crane to make the whole experience safer for everyone involved.

Unfortunately for the climber, Canada’s podium hopes were not to be on Saturday for the four Canadians taking part. Jack Crawford finished ninth, Cameron Alexander finished 14th, Jeffrey Read finished 25th and Brodie Seger finished in 29th.

With four events left in the men’s alpine skiing this Olympics, perhaps Canada will be able to get on the podium in one of those. And for Pridy, we can only hope that he’s able to find a less stressful place to watch from next race.

Canadians will be required to get an ETA to visit the U.K. starting this month

Canadians who want to go on a food crawl in Borough Market or admire art at the Tate Modern will be required to obtain a United Kingdom (U.K.) Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) soon.

The U.K. government announced in November that it would begin strictly enforcing the new visa waiver system starting on Feb. 25, 2026. The program allows travellers from countries that don’t require a visa to enter the U.K. and stay for up to six months.

“No permission, no travel,” reads a news release from the government. “From February 2026, visitors will not be able to travel to the U.K. without advance permission.”

According to the U.K. Home Office, the visa waiver system was introduced to improve border security. Applicants must provide their biographic, biometric, and contact details and answer some “suitability questions.”

“ETAs give us greater power to stop those who pose a threat from setting foot in the country and give us a fuller picture of immigration,” stated U.K. Migration and Citizenship Minister Mike Tapp.

The U.K. first launched the ETA in October 2023. According to the government, more than 13.3 million visitors have successfully applied and “benefited from faster, smoother travel.”

“ETAs are also better for travellers. Digitizing the immigration system ensures the millions of people we welcome to the U.K. every year enjoy a more seamless travel experience,” added Tapp.

The government explained that while the ETA was rolling out, it was not strictly enforced to give tourists time to adjust to the new requirement.

WHO NEEDS AN ETA?

Travellers from 85 countries who don’t need a visa to enter the U.K., including Canada and the United States, are required to get an ETA.

The U.K. government says you’ll need an ETA to do the following:

- Come to the U.K. for up to six months for tourism, visiting family and friends, business or study
- Come to the U.K. for up to three months on the Creative Worker visa concession
- Transit through the U.K. – including if you’re not going through U.K. border control

You don’t need an ETA if you have either:

- A British or Irish passport
- Permission to live, work or study in the U.K.
- A visa to enter the U.K.

The Government of Canada has already issued a travel advisory, notifying Canadians heading to the U.K. that they must apply for an ETA starting on Feb. 25, otherwise they won’t be able to board their transport and cannot legally travel to the U.K.

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE U.K. ETA AND HOW MUCH IT COSTS

Canadians can apply through the U.K. ETA’s app or on its website.

Since you cannot save your progress, you must complete your application in one go. The service will time out if you’re inactive for 20 minutes.

To start, upload a photo of the passport you will use to travel to the U.K. You’ll then be asked to scan your face with your device. Children nine and younger won’t be required to do so.

After uploading a photo of yourself, you’ll be asked to answer some questions. You won’t be required to enter your travel details.

The government said that most people currently get a decision within minutes, but that it’s recommended to allow three working days in case your application needs additional review. You’ll receive an email confirming your ETA, which is linked to the passport you used to apply. An ETA is valid for two years.

If you’re travelling as a group, each person must apply separately.

Canadians don’t need an ETA if they already have a visa or already have permission to live, work, or study in the U.K.

Last January, the ETA cost £10 (C$18.60). In April, the U.K. government increased the fee by £6 to £16 (C$29.80). That’s an extra C$11.20 that Canadians will have to pay to shop in Camden Market.

The U.K. isn’t the only country that has implemented an entry requirement for visa-exempt foreigners.

The European Union is raising its fee for the European Travel Information Authorization System (ETIAS) in 2026.

Canada has had a similar ETA system in place for years, which costs only $7.

The United States also has a similar setup called the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).

Canadians can get a refund for these recalled products

There are several recent recall notices in Canada that are also offering refunds.

From recall announcements for Dollarama products to Costco items, it’s worth checking if you’re impacted to see if you can get some cash.

Here are some products that have been recalled in Canada recently that are providing refunds.

STAIN REMOVER RECALL

Health Canada has issued a massive recall for a stain remover brand sold across the country.

On Jan. 22, the agency released a recall notice on Angry Orange Stain Removers due to the risk of exposure to bacteria.

The company reported that 43,781 units of the affected products were sold in Canada and 1,390,834 were sold in the U.S. from March 2019 to December 2025.

To receive a refund, you’ll need to take a picture of the product with “recalled” and your initials written in marker and email the photo to productrecall@angryorange.com.

Here’s how you can check if you have the impacted product.

DOLLARAMA TOYS

Dollarama shoppers can get a refund for a popular toy that’s part of a massive recall across Canada.

On Jan. 20, Dollarama issued a recall for thousands of baby toys sold at various locations, according to Health Canada. The recall affects Disney Baby Water Teethers.

“Under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, teether fillings must not contain any living microorganisms,” reads the statement. “Health Canada’s sampling and evaluation program has determined that the liquid filling is contaminated with the fungus Rhinocladiella similis.”

As a result of the recall, the company is urging people to stop using the products immediately and to return them to a Dollarama store for a refund.

Here’s how you can check if you have the impacted product.

COSTCO CANADA CHOCOLATE RECALL

Costco Canada is offering refunds after announcing a recall for two types of chocolates, citing health risks due to possible food contamination.

On Thursday, Jan. 8, Costco Canada shared a notice issued by Nova Scotia-based chocolate company Peace by Chocolate. The company is recalling The Harmony Bar and the Classic Box of 15 assorted filled chocolates, both of which were sold online between Sept. 7 and Dec. 3.

Peace by Chocolate issued the voluntary recall of select pistachio-containing chocolate products. This was done after Tootsi Impex Inc., one of the company’s approved ingredients suppliers, initiated the recall for a specific lot of pistachios due to possible Salmonella contamination. No other products in the Peace by Chocolate variety packs are being recalled.

Here’s how you can check if you have the impacted product.

BODY SPRAYS AND HAIR PRODUCTS

Health Canada issued a recall notice on Jan. 8 for various Magic BM products due to missing mandatory hazard labelling.

“These products do not meet the Cosmetic Regulations in Canada,” reads the notice. “The products are missing required hazard symbols, signal words on the front of the containers and safety information.”

The affected products include AXE Men Deodorant Body Spray and Pantene hairspray. According to Health Canada, the company reported that 3,203 units of the affected products were sold across the country from 2024 to December 2025.

“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled Magic BM Trading Co. Ltd products and return them to the place of purchase for a refund,” reads the notice.

Here’s how you can check if you have the impacted product.

Stretch your post-holiday budget with this 30-day savings challenge

January typically brings colder weather and tighter budgets, but it also allows us the chance to start fresh, even if New Year’s resolutions aren’t your style.

It’s more productive to focus on a tangible goal than make lofty proclamations of self-betterment, so why not consider a 30-day savings challenge instead?

If you’re like nearly everyone else in the country, you probably spent the last few months overshooting your budget just a smidge. By committing to saving through January, you’re putting yourself in a good financial place for the coming year.

You can tailor the savings challenge to your own goals and circumstances, but here are a few ideas to get you started.

CANCEL UNUSED SERVICES

Go through your bank statements and look at every automatic withdrawal. Chances are, there is at least one or two subscriptions you could do without. Think music, streaming, meal delivery, grocery kits, and fitness memberships you aren’t making the most of, and online software you no longer use.

And if you end up missing a cancelled service, you can always resubscribe! But chances are, you’ll get along just fine without it — and enjoy the bit of extra cash in your pocket.

USE THE LIBRARY

Yes, it’s fun to buy the hot new releases as soon as they hit the shelves, but do you know who else has that book you’ve been wanting to read? Your library. And that’s not all — most libraries have movies, music, courses, streaming services, and other free amenities to take advantage of.

In the words of Arthur, “having fun isn’t hard when you’ve got a library card!”

OPT FOR A PRE-LOVED PHONE

2026 is the year we stop buying expensive new phones when our old ones work perfectly fine. And if your old phone doesn’t work perfectly fine, consider a pre-loved phone instead! With other people upgrading their tech at the drop of a hat, so many used phones in great condition are hitting the market at incredible discounts.

Fizz sells refurbished and fully inspected phones so that you can enjoy an almost new device without having to pay full price. It’s good for your wallet and the environment. Each phone meets a high standard, so you can rest easy knowing you won’t be scammed by some sketchy reseller.

TRY A FREE FIZZ TRIAL

Now that you’re trying a Fizz phone, why not a Fizz plan? As of January, Fizz is giving new users a chance to try the provider for free. That includes 3 GB of data and 100 call minutes across 15 days, which means if you’re committing to a 30-day saving challenge, that’s half a month with a free phone plan. You can check out this amazing offer here!

As long as you have an existing Canadian phone number and a phone that’s eSIM compatible, you’ll be good to go! Sure, you’ll still be paying for your current provider, but once you decide to make the switch, you’ll be saving in the long run with a more affordable plan, no price increases, and other sweet perks.

SAVE ON YOUR PHONE BILL

When you buy a phone with a purple stamp at Fizz, you can get a rebate of up to 90 per cent off on your mobile plan. And no, it’s not a trap. You’ll still have the flexibility to change your plan as needed and access sweet perks from the loyalty program.

And that’s on top of everything you already know and love from Fizz, including data rollover, no surprise fees, and easy online navigation.

Life is expensive, but your phone and entertainment don’t have to be. Learn more about Fizz this January, and subscribe online today.

Canada picks up first World Junior medal in three years

Canada has medalled at the World Junior Championship for the first time in three years.

Though it wasn’t the medal the Canadians were hoping for heading into the tournament, they were able to defeat Finland by a 6-3 final on Monday afternoon to pick up a bronze medal.

Canada got goals from Sam O’Reilly (2), Braeden Cootes, Zayne Parekh, Porter Martone, and Gavin McKenna in the win. Parekh was also able to add an assist on Martone’s tally, giving him 13 points in the tournament. That sets a new record for most points in a World Juniors tournament for a Canadian defenceman. Both Bryan McCabe (1995) and Alex Pietrangelo (2010) had sat atop the leaderboard with 12.

Picking up the win for Canada was Carter George, who stopped 22 of the 25 shots he faced.

Canada’s quest for a gold medal came to an end on Sunday, where they fell in a thrilling outing to Czechia by a 6-4 final. It marked the third-straight year in which Czechia has eliminated Canada from gold medal contention.

Despite the tournament not going how they would have liked, Canada was able to return to the podium for the first time since 2023. They finished fifth place in both 2024 and 2025 after winning gold in ’23.

While a disappointing result, Canada will have an opportunity to win gold on home soil soon enough. The 2027 World Junior Championship is set to take place in Edmonton and Red Deer.

As for this year’s tournament, the gold medal winner will be decided on Monday evening in a final between Sweden and Czechia. Both countries have two gold medals in this annual tournament.

Legitimate survey sites Canadians can use to make some extra cash

Looking for a low-effort way to make money online? Paid survey sites are one way to earn gift cards or “beer money.”

Make money by sharing your opinions through surveys that cover a wide range of topics, including sports, food, and current events. The number of points you earn depends on the length of the survey. Once you’ve racked up enough points to reach a certain threshold, you can then redeem those points through PayPal payments, e-transfers, or gift cards.

Most survey sites allow you to redeem gift cards from popular chains, such as Starbucks or Tim Hortons. Alternatively, you can use your points by claiming gift cards from Amazon Canada, Home Depot, or Walmart Canada.

While paid surveys won’t exactly make you rich, it’s one way to make money during your commute or lunch break. Read on to find out your options.

ANGUS REID

When you sign up to participate in Angus Reid surveys, you can expect to receive at least one survey each month via email. You can earn points by taking surveys that last from 5 to 15 minutes — anything longer will result in higher compensation.

Topics vary from current events, food, transportation, and mental health. When your account reaches the point equivalent of $25 (i.e., 2,500 points), you can redeem your points. You’ll then be sent a Gift Card Pass that you can use to select an e-gift card from retailers such as Amazon, Cineplex, Roots, Staples, Tim Hortons, and many more.

CADDLE

Once you sign up on Caddle, you can make money by answering surveys, watching ads, and writing reviews. You must earn a minimum of $20 to redeem your cash, which will be sent to you via e-transfer.

You can also earn rebates by uploading receipts after your purchase. Previously, Caddle has worked with companies such as Domino’s, Nestle, Deloitte, Pepsico, and Danone. You can download Caddle from the App Store or Google Play Store.

IPSOS ISAY

Share your opinions by taking part in diverse studies through Ipsos iSay, which include live studies, product testing, special communities, and activity journals. Ipsos is owned and managed by market research professionals, and its surveys are utilized by a wide range of organizations, including brands, government agencies, media outlets, and others.

By taking the survey, you can earn digital rewards. For example, 500 points can get you a $5 iTunes gift card. You can also opt for various digital gift cards from Starbucks, Tim Hortons, Indigo, Walmart, and Amazon Canada. You can even receive PayPal funds.

SWAGBUCKS

Online surveys range from single-question polls to 30-minute market research questionnaires. In addition to surveys, you can earn points by shopping in-store or online, watching entertaining videos, playing games, and searching the web.

Most surveys pay around 100 to 300 Swagbucks (SB), and you can redeem your points through restaurants and retailers. According to Swagbucks, members have already cashed out a total of $660,252,386 in cash. Sign up and instantly receive a $10 bonus.

GOOGLE OPINION REWARDS

Download the Google Opinion Rewards app to start earning points. Surveys are sent out randomly, and each one expires in 24 hours.

According to Google, you’re more likely to receive additional surveys if you answer surveys honestly and with correct information. You’ll receive credits to use in the Google Play store (if you’re using the Android app) or cash in your PayPal account (if you’re using the iOS app).

LEO

Not only do you earn points when you sign up to complete surveys, but each survey also gives you a chance to enter weekly and monthly contests. You can boost your odds by inviting friends to take part or answering the question of the day. LEO conducts surveys for businesses, governments, and more.

When it comes to redeeming your points, you have numerous options, including PayPal transfers or gift cards for popular brands like Uber, Starbucks, Mastercard, Walmart, Tim Hortons, and Amazon Canada. You can participate in surveys on their website or through their app.

MARU VOICE CANADA

Although Maru Voice Canada isn’t currently accepting new members, it’s worth checking to see when membership openings are available again. Upon signing up, members receive 500 welcome points instantly. Survey topics range from products to social issues, and the number of surveys you receive may vary.

You must have a minimum of 2,500 points to redeem your rewards. You can opt for a PayPal transfer, gift cards, or a virtual or physical Visa gift card. In July, panellists were awarded $72,229.23.

PROLIFIC

To participate, start by joining Prolific’s waitlist. The company was co-founded at Oxford University in 2014, and was created to get “high-quality human data and input for research.” As a member, you can filter tasks by reward, time, or other preferences. Participants are paid via PayPal.

PRIME OPINION

Another paid survey option is Prime Opinion. The process is straightforward: sign up, select any survey you want, and get paid. When redeeming your rewards, you have the option to get paid via PayPal or a Virtual Visa card.

You can also choose gift cards for Walmart Canada, Uber, Lyft, lululemon, WestJet, or Home Depot, or opt for a virtual Visa gift card.

Ways Canadians will get money from the government in January

Check your bank account — eligible Canadians will be getting more money from the government next month.

A new year means more opportunities to get money from the federal government through the benefits and credits it offers. Canadians will be receiving the first round of benefit and credit payments from Ottawa for 2026.

This money from the government aims to alleviate your financial burden amid the cost-of-living crisis.

Mark your calendars — here’s when Canada is sending out the first benefit and credit payments of 2026.

GST/HST CREDIT — JAN. 5, 2026

The Goods and Services Tax/Harmonized Sales Tax (GST/HST) credit is a tax-free quarterly payment that aims to help families with low and modest incomes offset the taxes they pay.

Canadians began receiving more money from the government in July 2025 because the new benefit year began.

The GST credit payments increased by 2.7 per cent. Based on this, eligible Canadians could get up to:

- $533 if you are single
- $698 if you are married or have a common-law partner
- $183 for each child under the age of 19

It is one of the credits that is set to increase again in July 2026, which marks the new benefit year. Check how much more money you could receive from the government.

ONTARIO TRILLIUM BENEFIT — JAN. 9, 2026

The OTB is a tax-free payment that combines the Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit, the Northern Ontario Energy Credit, and the Ontario Sales Tax Credit.

Ontarians could be eligible for one of the three credits. If you’re between the ages of 18 and 64, the maximum you’ll receive is $1,283, while the maximum you’ll qualify for if you’re 65 or older is $1,461. If you live on a reserve or a public long-term care home, the maximum you can receive is $285. You’ll receive $25 for the time you lived in a designated college, university, or private school residence in 2004.

The amount you receive for the Northern Ontario Energy Credit depends on your marital status. If you’re single, you could receive a maximum of $185, while families could receive a maximum of $285.

You can receive up to $371 for the Ontario Sales Tax Credit. However, you may be eligible for additional credit of up to $371 for your spouse or common-law partner, and each dependent child under 19 years of age on the 1st of the payment month. This credit does not affect your GST/HST credit payments.

ADVANCED CANADA WORKERS BENEFIT — JAN. 12, 2026

The ACWB is an advanced payment of the Canada Workers Benefit (CWB), a refundable tax credit that eligible individuals can claim on their tax return. It aims to help individuals and families who are working and earning a lower income.

The ACWB payment increased in July in line with the new benefit year.

If you’re eligible, check to see how much more you could receive.

CANADA DISABILITY BENEFIT — JAN. 15, 2026

This new government benefit provides financial assistance to Canadians aged 18 to 64 who live with a disability.

Applications opened in June. If you qualify, you’ll begin getting money from the government the month after your application is approved.

“You may receive back payments for up to 24 months from when we get your application, but not for any previous months of eligibility prior to June 2025,” reads the government site.

If eligible, your first payment will be on the third Thursday of the month following your approval.

To learn more about the new benefit, who’s eligible, and how much you can get, check out Daily Hive’s guide.

CANADA CHILD BENEFIT — JAN. 20, 2026

The CCB is a tax-free monthly payment for eligible families to help with the cost of raising kids under the age of 18.

Canadian families got a 2.7 per cent boost in child tax payments in 2025. Annual payments for children under six will increase from $7,787 to $7,997, or $666 monthly. For children aged six to 17, this means an annual payment increase from $6,570 to $6,748, or $562 per month.

The CCB will increase again in July 2026. Check to see how much more money your family could receive from the government.

B.C. FAMILY BENEFIT — JAN. 20, 2026

Families who qualify for the B.C. Family Benefit (BCFB) will receive this monthly tax-free payment, along with their CCB, in a single payment.

The CRA states that families with children under 18 could receive $145.83 per month for the first child, $41.66 per month for the first child in a single-parent family, $91.66 per month for the second child, and $75 per month for each additional child.

Families with a net income between $29,526 and $94,483 could receive $64.58 per month for the first child, $62.50 per month for the second child, and $60.41 per month for each additional child.

ONTARIO CHILD BENEFIT — JAN. 20, 2026

Ontario families with low to moderate income could be eligible for the Ontario Child Benefit (OCB), a provincial tax-free benefit that’s delivered with the CCB in a single monthly payment.

Families could be eligible to receive a maximum of $143.91 per month for each child under 18 years of age, and families with a family net income above $26,364 may receive a partial benefit.

CANADA PENSION PLAN — JAN. 28, 2026

The CPP is a monthly, taxable benefit that replaces part of eligible Canadians’ income upon retirement and is paid for the rest of their lives.

To receive money from the government, you must have made at least one valid contribution to the CPP and be at least 60 years old.

You’ll receive your full pension even if you’re under 70 and still working; contributing to the CPP post-retirement benefit can increase your pension.

The amount you receive will depend on when you decided to start your pension, the amount you contributed, how much you earned throughout your working life, and how long you contributed to the CPP. New beneficiaries aged 65 will receive an average monthly payment of $899.67. The maximum monthly payment you can receive at age 65 is $1,433.

OLD AGE SECURITY — JAN. 28, 2026

Canadians aged 65 and older can qualify for the OAS pension regardless of their work history.

Those aged 65 to 74 can receive up to $727.67 per month in 2025 if their annual net income in 2023 was less than $142,609.

However, Canadians aged 75 and older can receive a maximum of $800.44 if their annual net world income in 2023 was less than $148,179.

Last day to cash in on Loblaw bread price-fixing settlement

It’s the last day for eligible Canadians to claim their share of the Loblaw bread price-fixing class-action settlement.

If you’re a Canadian who purchased bread from Loblaw stores, you can now apply to receive compensation from the bread price-fixing class-action settlement.

The Superior Court of Quebec and the Ontario Superior Court of Justice approved a $500-million settlement in the bread price-fixing class action lawsuit against Loblaw. The claims period began on Sept. 11, and Canadians who want to submit a claim must do so before the deadline of Dec. 12, 2025.

The lawsuit against Loblaw alleges that the supermarket giant overcharged Canadians for bread as a result of an industry-wide price-fixing scandal involving certain packaged bread products. There are also ongoing class actions against Canada Bread, Sobeys, Metro, Walmart Canada, and Giant Tiger.

In addition to Loblaw Companies Ltd. and parent company George Weston Ltd., other grocery chains mentioned in the lawsuit include Metro, Sobeys, and Walmart.

ARE YOU ELIGIBLE?

You can now submit a claim if you’re a Canadian resident who purchased packaged bread between Jan. 1, 2001, and Dec. 31, 2021. According to the Canadian Packaged Bread Class Actions Settlement website, you don’t need to provide proof of purchase.

If you previously received a $25 Loblaw card from the Loblaw Card Program, you can still submit a compensation claim. However, you will only receive more than $25 if there’s enough money in the settlement fund and if the additional amount is at least $5.

Packaged bread includes any and all packaged bread products and bread alternatives produced or distributed by Loblaw. Products include, but aren’t limited to, bagged bread, buns, rolls, bagels, naan bread, English muffins, wraps, pita, and tortillas. It does not include frozen bread and bread baked on-site in the supermarket.

HOW MUCH CAN YOU RECEIVE?

As per the settlement agreement, Weston and Loblaw must pay the remaining $404 million, having previously paid $96 million through the earlier Loblaw Card Program. Once court-approved expenses have been deducted, 22 per cent is allocated for class members in Quebec, while 78 per cent is allocated for class members nationwide.

The exact amount that class members will receive hasn’t been specified and will depend on several factors, including the settlement funds available, the number of approved claims, and whether a claimant has previously received a $25 Loblaw card.

Funds have also been allocated to business owners who purchased bread for resale from 2001 to 2021.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO NEXT?

Canadians can submit a claim by filling out an online claim form. You’ll be required to provide personal details, including your full name, date of birth, address, and contact information.

You must also answer a verification question to prove that you’re eligible to submit a claim, and state whether you received a $25 Loblaw Card under the Loblaw Card Program in 2018.

If you live in Quebec, you can submit a claim on a separate website. According to the timeline on the website, processing claims takes time, and class members are likely to receive their money in 2026. Compensation payments are typically sent out six to 12 months after the claims deadline.

“This resolution provides Canadian consumers with the monetary relief they deserve,” said Jim Orr, a partner at Orr Taylor LLP.

Whether you’re ready to retire next year or you’re looking for future retirement inspiration, it’s no secret that many Canadians are choosing to hang up their hats abroad.

Packing up your life and leaving family and friends behind to move to a new city or country is a big decision. If you or a family member is thinking of retiring abroad, a new report released by International Living is a good place to start your research.

The travel magazine released its 2026 Annual Global Retirement Index this month, revealing the world’s top 10 retirement havens next year. International Living says the index isn’t just a ranking, but a “decision-making framework.”

“Based on more than 40 years of on-the-ground experience and in-depth reporting from our trusted network of expats and correspondents, this Index is built to help you take action,” reads the report.

There are a lot of factors that go into choosing where you retire, which is why the magazine’s editors scored the best countries for retirement based on the cost of living, health care, housing, climate, visa and residency options, and more.

Though Canada didn’t make the list, it provides diverse options for Canucks who want to live the rest of their days in a different environment.

Here are the top 10 places to retire in 2026.

10. MALAYSIA

According to the report, you can get the most bang for your buck in Malaysia when it comes to quality of life, which is why it’s among the best retirement havens in the world.

“Life here is just so easy. You’ll get by in English without much of a hitch; if you choose to drive (they drive on the left), you’ll find the roads are excellent, and you’ll have no problem finding high-speed internet or cable,” states the magazine.

Health care is also world-class with English-speaking doctors, and the ability to see a specialist without needing an appointment for as little as $20, reads the report.

Canadian retirees have plenty of cities to choose from, depending on their lifestyle. The magazine recommends checking out places like Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Malacca, and Ipoh.

“And living in Malaysia means you have the perfect base for exploring Southeast Asia. Low-cost flights throughout the region mean a weekend in Vietnam or Borneo is easy,” reads the report.

“When you sprinkle the stunning beaches the country has to offer into the mix, and then throw in unbeatable health care at super-low prices, you have a country like no other in Southeast Asia.”

The report notes that Malaysia’s climate is tropical, with annual southwest (April to October) and northeast (October to February) monsoons.

9. THAILAND

Thailand is one of the best places to retire in 2026 due to its “vibrant blend of tradition and modernity, offering retirees the opportunity to immerse themselves in a culture renowned for its warmth and hospitality.”

The report says its tropical climate, with average temperatures between 25°C and 35°C, means year-round sunshine, which is probably enticing for Canadians who dread long winters.

“From the bustling cityscapes of Bangkok to tranquil islands like Koh Samui and Phi Phi, there’s something for everyone,” reads the report.

On top of the warm climate, it’s less expensive to live a high-quality of life in Thailand compared to Western countries. According to the magazine, retirees report living comfortably on $1,500 to $2,000 per month, depending on location.

“Rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Chiang Mai, for example, starts at $400, while in Bangkok, similar accommodations might cost $600. Dining out is incredibly affordable, with meals at local eateries costing just $2 to $5,” reads the report.

Health care is also high-quality and affordable in Thailand. International Living says routine check-ups cost about $30, and dental cleanings average $40.

“Many private hospitals in Bangkok and Chiang Mai are internationally accredited, with English-speaking staff,” reads the report.

8. SPAIN

International Living put Spain on the list of the best places to retire in 2026 for its beautiful beaches, mountains, cities, and lifestyle.

“Away from the tourist trail and the hordes of holidaymakers, there are incredibly beautiful beaches, calm seas, pretty countryside, and small historic towns just waiting to be explored,” reads the report.

The magazine highlights the country’s “lively, outgoing lifestyle” as a big plus.

“In Spain, life is meant to be enjoyed, and hanging out is an art,” states the report.

Last year, Daily Hive spoke with a Canadian who moved to Spain, who echoed this sentiment, crediting the less stressful work culture.

“My life improved in every single way,” he said.

International Living says this lifestyle all comes at an affordable price, with Spain having one of the lowest costs of living in Europe.

7. FRANCE

The report says France has all of the ingredients to be a retirement haven.

“Good food, good wine, haute couture, a good climate, unspoiled countryside, glittering culture, excellent health care, colourful traditions and history, and, as a bonus, the glamour and sophistication of Paris — arguably the world’s most bewitching capital,” it reads.

If you’re concerned about the price to live there, the magazine says it’s more affordable than you think, as long as you know where to look.

“If good health care, a relaxed lifestyle, and all the modern comforts you enjoy at home are among your top priorities, then France should be on your radar,” states International Living.

6. ITALY

Italy made the list for its history, art, culinary excellence, and lifestyle, prioritizing family and friends.

According to the report, the cost of living is surprisingly affordable, especially in smaller towns and rural areas.

“A couple can live comfortably on $2,000 to $2,500 per month. Renting a one-bedroom apartment in the countryside can cost as little as $500, while urban centers like Florence or Milan command higher prices, starting at $1,000,” it reads.

On top of that, the country’s health-care system ranks among the best in the world.

“Routine visits cost around €25 ($27), and expats can access public health care for a modest annual fee. Many also opt for private care to reduce wait times and gain faster access to specialists. Both options ensure retirees receive excellent medical services,” reads the report.

5. MEXICO

Mexico is already a popular destination for Canadian tourists and expats due to its weather and lower cost of living.

International Living says its varied geography gives retirees many options to choose where they want to settle.

“Little silver-mining towns where the winding streets seem to head up to the clouds… fishing villages where you can rise at dawn to buy the day’s catch fresh from returning fishermen… beach towns where the sound of surf and the tang of salt water linger in the air… and cosmopolitan cities,” reads the report.

Some Canadians have even reported better health care in Mexico.

4. PORTUGAL

The magazine says the main draws to retire in Portugal include its amazing weather, abundance of golf and water sports, delicious fresh food, and the affordable cost of living.

“Stacked up against the rest of Western Europe, this expat haven also comes out on top for affordability with a first-world lifestyle,” reads the report.

The community you’ll find in Portugal is also a selling point. International Living says Portuguese people are “some of the most relaxed, family-oriented, helpful, and courteous folks you’ll meet anywhere.”

3. COSTA RICA

This tropical country in Central America is the third-best place to retire in 2026 due to its low cost of living, great health care, modern telecom infrastructure, beautiful beaches, rainforests, theatres, art galleries, and fine dining.

“This is a middle-income, developing economy, with a tradition of democracy. Tourist facilities are extensive, and because English is a second language for many Costa Ricans, the country feels very visitor-friendly,” reads the report.

2. PANAMA

International Living highlights Panama’s low cost of living as the main draw for retirees.

“You can still take a taxi across town for a few dollars, see the latest blockbuster film for about $6, get a trim at the barbershop for $5… or have a main course and glass of wine at one of the city’s innumerable restaurants for $20,” reads the report.

The magazine says expats cite the country’s geographical diversity and its proximity to North America as a major factor in its being a retirement haven.

It also offers the Pensionado Program, which provides access to housing to expats with pensions.

“Pensioners with residence in Panama — whether foreign or Panamanian — also receive hefty discounts on living expenses,” reads the report.

1. GREECE

International Living named Greece the best place to retire in 2026.

“Whether you’re a short-term visitor or an aspiring expat, Greece has it all: outstanding year-round weather, affordable accommodation, superb food, friendly locals, and amazing history,” states the magazine.

According to the report, accommodations are pretty affordable in Greece, especially outside the main tourist regions. Even in Athens, average rents are around 85 per cent cheaper than in New York City, states the magazine.

“This country also boasts lively ski resorts, world-class dining, ample wildlife (including wild dolphins, loggerhead turtles, bears, wolves, badgers, and monk seals), and enough forests, lakes, and canyons to keep even the keenest hiker busy for decades,” reads the report. “City-lovers will have their hands full too, with ample museums, cafés, and stroll-worthy cobblestoned streets to explore.”

Some Canadians could be required to share social media history at U.S. border

Some Canadian residents who plan to travel to the U.S. could soon be required to share their social media history when entering the country.

Canadians travelling to the U.S. could soon face additional restrictions, according to a new proposal shared in a notice by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The notice, dated Dec. 10, includes a proposal that would make it mandatory for travellers to share their social media history.

If the proposal is approved, those who require an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) will need to provide their social media history from the past five years. According to CBP, the more extensive screening process would be part of efforts to comply with Executive Order 14161, which aims to protect the U.S. from terrorist and other national safety threats.

The CBP website states that those with a Canadian passport do not need an ESTA and would therefore be exempt if the proposal is approved. However, residents of Canada who don’t have a Canadian passport and are citizens of Visa Waiver Program countries will be subject to these conditions.

In an email to Daily Hive, a CBP spokesperson said that, for now, nothing has changed for travellers entering the U.S.

“This is not a final rule; it is simply the first step in starting a discussion to have new policy options to keep the American people safe,” they stated. “The Department is constantly looking at how we vet those coming into the country, especially after the terrorist attack in Washington, D.C., against our National Guard right before Thanksgiving.”

In addition to proposed mandatory social media checks for ESTA applicants, CBP wants to add more data fields in the application form. The federal law enforcement agency intends to collect additional information, such as phone numbers used in the last five years, email addresses used in the last ten years, and data on family members, including their phone numbers, date of birth, and residences. ESTA applicants must also provide biometrics such as face, fingerprint, DNA, and iris scans.

Accessing travellers’ electronic data isn’t new. According to the latest data, CBP searched the electronic devices of 55,318 international travellers in 2025, up from the 47,047 devices searched in 2024.

According to the notice, the public has sixty days to respond to these proposed changes.

Lotto Max draw leaves several Canadians $1 million richer

The recent Lotto Max draw may not have resulted in a jackpot winner, but several lottery players will still walk away with an impressive payout.

The Lotto Max draw took place on Tuesday, Dec. 9, and at the time, there were 12 Maxmillions prizes to be won. After they matched the winning numbers, three Canadians will each take home a $1-million prize. According to PlayNow, one ticket was purchased online in B.C., while WCLC states that one ticket was sold in Edmonton, and the other was sold elsewhere in Alberta.

As for the main draw, the winning numbers were 03, 19, 20, 29, 30, 34, and 49, with bonus 22. Although no one won the $75-million jackpot, two people matched six of the seven numbers and the bonus to score the second prize. As a result, they’ll split the prize and will each receive a share worth $152,721.70. Both tickets were sold in Ontario.

The third prize will be shared among 57 lottery winners who’ll each get $5,358.70.

In B.C., no one won the $500,000 Lotto Max Extra Prize, and similarly in Ontario, no one won the $1-million Encore top prize.

The last time someone won the jackpot was on Oct. 28, when a lottery player from Ontario won the $40 million jackpot. The ticket was sold in Grey County.

If the $75-million prize from the last draw wasn’t impressive enough, the next draw has now reached the game’s prize limit — a whopping $80-million jackpot. The draw will take place on Friday, Dec. 12, and there are now 14 Maxmillions prizes up for grabs.

Why Canadians should ditch Cancún and head to Mazatlán this winter

Whether you’re a thrill seeker, an animal lover, or just want to unwind on the beach, there are plenty of activities in Mazatlán, Mexico, for any traveller.

As Canada descends into the depths of winter, you may be looking for a warm getaway. Cancún is usually the first place that pops into Canadians’ heads when thinking of a winter escape to Mexico. However, I think Mazatlán — a coastal town located in the Sinaloa state along the Pacific Ocean shoreline — is an underrated, must-visit destination.

I joined the town’s tourism board, Visit Mazatlán, for a week filled with beautiful views, exciting activities, and delicious food. The trip was well-timed in the last week of October — the weather in Toronto was getting chillier, and I wasn’t quite ready to leave summer behind.

It was my first visit to Mazatlán, aka “the Pearl of the Pacific,” and it happened to coincide with Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) festivities in Mexico.

We stayed in Centro Histórico (the town’s historic district downtown) at Pueblo Bonito Vantage, a colonial mansion that was restored into a gorgeous boutique hotel.

As a Torontonian, I love a walkable city. I had only ever stayed at big resorts in Mexico, where travelling by golf carts inside and tour buses for excursions outside of the resort was the norm. It was refreshing to be able to walk the cobblestoned streets of the historic centre and be taken back in time, surrounded by the colourful colonial buildings.

On our first day in Mazatlán, I decided to walk to the Malecón, one of the world’s longest oceanfront boardwalks, to catch the sunset at the beach. It took me less than five minutes to get there from the hotel.

I sat on the ledge of the boardwalk and watched the sky explode into orange, purple and yellow hues as beachgoers splashed around in the soft waves of the Pacific Ocean. I relaxed into the feeling of the warm 30-degree breeze surrounding me. It was certainly the perfect start to a week filled with amazing experiences in this coastal town.

Here are some must-do activities Canadians should add to their itinerary for a fun-filled winter getaway in Mazatlán, Mexico.

CHECK OUT THE GRAND AQUARIUM OF THE SEA OF CORTEZ

If you’re looking for an interactive, family-friendly activity, look no further than a visit to the largest aquarium in Mexico.

We spent a whole afternoon at the aquarium, looking in awe at giant tanks filled with sharks, humongous red snappers, and sea creatures in all shades of the rainbow.

What made our visit particularly unique was the opportunity we got to not only look at, but also touch and handle some animals.

The aquarium has two touch tanks — one where you can gently pet puffer fish and another where you can feed and touch excitable sting rays.

Two animals I never thought I would get close to in a million years are penguins and capybaras. We got to interact with Humboldt Penguins — pet them, feed them, and even play with them.

The newest members of the aquarium are baby capybaras. I’ve only seen capybaras from afar at the High Park zoo in Toronto (yes, the ones that made their great escape back in 2016), so I was overjoyed when we got to pet baby capybaras at the aquarium. They truly are just chill guys. Most of them were munching on tree bark or lounging in the shade. We also got to hold an owl, a snake, and feed white-tailed deer.

On top of getting close and personal with your fave animals, the building itself is an experience.

Designed by renowned architect Tatiana Bilbao, the aquarium is built to look like it just emerged from the depths of the ocean.

EXPLORE THE OBSERVATORIO MAZATLÁN

If you want amazing views of the Mazatlán coastline, it’s worth taking a funicular ride up to the summit of Cerro del Vigía to explore the Observatorio Mazatlán. Originally built as a military lookout, the observatory has been beautifully restored.

Inside, you’ll get a sneak peek at what a house would have looked like in the 19th century, during the time of revolution. Outside, there are spectacular views of the Pacific on terraces that are home to agave gardens.

We got to have brunch on the patio, taking in the scenery as a live band played in the background.

After our stomachs were full, we visited the bird sanctuary located on the grounds of the observatory, where we were able to walk among parrots, flamingoes and tucans.

RIDE THE FAROLESA ZIPLINE

If you’re a thrill seeker who wants a more exciting route to the Observatorio, then you may want to ride the 1,265-metre-long Farolesa Zipline.

At 160 metres above the Pacific Ocean, it is the longest zipline over the ocean in Mexico. It allows visitors to take a quicker commute from the El Faro Lighthouse to Observatorio, lasting one to 1.2 minutes at speeds of 70 to 100 km per hour.

We woke up bright and early to avoid the long lines for the zipline. Just a warning — the only way to get to the zipline is to hike up Crestón Island, so make sure to wear breathable clothing, a hat, and bring a water bottle.

The trail is well-maintained, but it is 325 steps and a 152-metre elevation gain, so it’s no walk in the park. But the trek is worth it, not only for the ride to the Observatorio, but also for the amazing lookout at the top of the mountain.

The older I get, the more I fear for my life, so I was actually really nervous as we were harnessed and strapped in for the one-minute zip over the Pacific Ocean.

The scariest part was the beginning when they slid us back and pushed us off the platform to gain speed. It was like the initial drop on a roller coaster — my stomach did back flips, and I let out a little scream, but the rest of the zipline was a breeze.

I took in a 360 view of the mountains, the shoreline, and the crashing waves below me — it was breathtaking. Before I knew it, I was on the other side, and just like riding a roller coaster, I wanted to go again.

LEARN AT THE NATIONAL WHALE MUSEUM (MUNBA)

This was probably the most engaging and educational museum visit I’ve experienced. The MUNBA features 12 immersive exhibits and the largest collection of cetacean bones in Latin America, all housed in repurposed shipping containers.

The museum — which celebrates marine biodiversity and promotes conservation, sustainability, and education — is run by Oscar Ricardo Guzón, a marine ecologist and oceanographer with 20 years of experience at sea.

We were lucky enough to have him as our tour guide at the museum. Guzón’s passion for whales was evident in his breadth of knowledge and his commitment to bridging the gap between the gentle giants and humans.

“The museum is about us and our relationship with whales,” Guzón explained during the tour.

Some of the highlights of the museum include an interactive X-ray vision screen that shows the anatomy of a dolphin, a humpback whale song match-making game, and the skeleton of a sperm whale.

GO WHALE WATCHING

We were lucky to get a sneak peek of the whale watching experience with Munba Expeditions, also led by the National Whale Museum’s Guzón.

December to March is humpback whale season in Mazatlán. These excursions offer the chance to spot not only humpback whales, but also dolphins and sea turtles just off the coast.

Although we were a little early for peak humpback whale season, Guzón and his team had caught wind of one whale already in the waters that day. We hopped on a speedboat boat and the Munba Expeditions team tracked the humpback.

While we didn’t see it, we were able to hear its whale song through the hydrophone, a mic that’s used to detect, record and listen to sounds underwater.

IMMERSE IN THE PIRATE MANSION

The Pirate Mansion is a whimsical and educational activity, perfect for a family outing.

The interactive attraction is in the heart of downtown Mazatlán, taking visitors through the town’s storied past of explorers and pirates through themed rooms.

The guides are incredibly committed to their roles, making you feel immersed in the history. If you play your cards right (or wrong, depending on how you look at it), the pirate guide may throw you in jail, or “hang” you for insubordination.

TAKE A TOMATL FOOD TOUR

As a foodie, I was incredibly excited to be able to taste the local cuisine Mazatlán has to offer.

The Tomatl food tour is run by Paola Osuna — she was born and raised in Mazatlán and used to have a restaurant in the town’s historic district. She has been running Tomatl Mexican Culinary Experiences for about six years.

The culinary adventure she took us on wasn’t just about trying the most popular or trendiest restaurants in town. Osuna stressed the importance of understanding why locals in Mazatlán eat what they eat, and why they cook it the way they do.

“Gastronomy can teach you a lot about the weather, ecosystem, religion, and culture,” the guide told us.

We got to try Lalós, a local birria tacos spot; Efrén Pescados y Mariscos, a restaurant specializing in all things shrimp; locally brewed Pacifico beer; traditional Mazatlán home cooking at Cenaduria Chayito; and Nieves de Garrafa de con Medrano, an ice cream cart that has been a mainstay in downtown Mazatlán for decades.

The highlight of the tour was going through the life cycle of the shrimp. Osuna first brought us to the fishing port to show us where all of the shrimp are caught. She explained that Mazatlán is known as the shrimp capital of the world, and is one of the largest exporters of shrimp to countries like Canada, Japan, and the United States.

We then went to a local fish market and got to browse through the buckets of shrimp sold by las changueras, or the “shrimp ladies.” Nearby, we checked out a shop that sells dried shrimp and got to see the behind-the-scenes process.

“Mazatlán’s gastronomy scene is a must-see experience — it’s not just getting food in your belly, it’s something that you feel, you taste, you remember. It’s taking in the culture and history,” explained Osuna.

CATCH A VENADOS GAME

We happened to be in Mexico during the Toronto Blue Jays’ historic 2025 World Series run, and watching Mazatlán’s local baseball team play helped make up for me missing all of the fun back home.

The energy at the Teodoro Mariscal Baseball Stadium is ecstatic, and it’s a fun experience, whether you’re a sports fan or not.

We watched the game from La Marea Venados, a sports bar located inside the stadium, enjoying Mexican beer and snacks like tortillas and guacamole, aguachile, and ceviche. We even got to take a photo with the team’s beloved mascot, Venny, and his family.

CELEBRATE DÍA DE MUERTOS

Day of the Dead has passed, but if you happen to visit Mazatlán during the week of Nov. 1 and Nov. 2, it’s worth checking out the festivities in the historic district.

Día de Muertos is a traditional holiday in Mexico that honours friends and family members who have died. If you’ve watched Pixar’s Coco, you may know about the colourful and elaborate ofrendas (or altars), where families display photos of the deceased and place offerings like the person’s favourite food or toy.

Leading up to the day, I saw shops and homes setting up their altars on the streets of the historic district, making the town even more vibrant. Bright orange and yellow marigolds (cempazuchitl), which are supposed to help guide the dead to the altars, adorned windows and walkways.

We were lucky enough to experience Mazatlán’s Día de Muertos parade and festivities at Plazuela Machado on Nov. 1. It was a magical night where we were surrounded by extravagant costumes and people donning calavera (skull) makeup, which is a common symbol for the holiday.

The plaza had several giant calaveras displayed, but the main character was the giant La Catrina, who is a character associated with the Day of the Dead.

The parade was joyous and lively, with banda musicians wailing on trumpets and tubas, and folklórico dancers waving their colourful skirts down the streets.

It was definitely an experience I was grateful to check off my bucket list.

Ice cream sold at Costco Canada recalled due to salmonella

If you purchased ice cream at Costco Canada, make sure to check your freezer as the company has announced a recall due to a health risk.

On Dec. 4, Costco Canada published a recall notice for the Desi-Licious Kulfi Ice Cream Sticks, which were sold at warehouses and Costco Business Centres between Oct. 17, 2024, and Dec. 2, 2025. Gelda Foods, which is a division of Gelda and the Scientific and Industrial Department Corporation, is recalling several lots of the ice cream due to possible salmonella contamination.

The recalled dessert is a box of 14 lactose-free Indian-style ice cream sticks. It comes in two flavours: malai masti and pista passion. The ice cream is traditionally made with milk, pistachio, and cardamom.

Costco Canada shoppers are urged not to consume, serve, use, sell, or distribute the affected product.

“You may return the Desi-Licious Kulfi Ice Cream Sticks to a Costco warehouse to obtain a full refund,” reads a statement from Gelda Foods.

Customers are warned that food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled, but it can still make you sick. While healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, or diarrhea, it can be dangerous for young children, pregnant people, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. Salmonella can also cause long-term complications, including severe arthritis.

If you think you purchased this product, make sure to check the lot codes printed on the front of the package above the best-before date. The affected lots include the following codes: 4283, 4284, 4297, 4303, 4304, 4305, 4306, 4310, 5126, 5127, 5130, 5132, 5134, 5136, 5140, 5143, 5148, 5149, 5157, 5168, and 5169.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and ask you to please pass this letter along to anyone to whom Desi-Licious Kulfi Ice Cream Sticks may have been given,” states Gelda Food.

Shoppers should also be aware of the recently expanded recall involving pistachios and pistachio-containing products.

Major recall announced for McCain product sold across Canada

Consumers are being urged to check their freezers as Canada has announced a nationwide recall for a McCain product.

The recall notice for the McCain product was issued across Canada on Tuesday, Dec. 9, by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) due to “extraneous material.” According to the CFIA, the McCain Tasti Taters brand Crispy Potato Bites are being recalled “due to pieces of plastic.”

The recalled products include both the 800 g and 1.8 kg bags of the McCain Tasti Taters. Affected lots have the Universal Product Codes (UPC) 0 55773 00079 5 and 0 55773 00306 2. You can also check the packaging for the codes F250226; 1005286322, or F250226; 1005286328.

“Do not use, sell, serve, or distribute the affected products,” reads the statement.

CFIA didn’t state how many units of the recalled product were sold.

The recall has been categorized as a class two, which means that “there is a moderate risk that consuming the food may lead to short-term or non-life-threatening health problems.”

The CFIA stated that McCain Foods Ltd. alerted them of the issue.

According to the company’s website, McCain was founded in New Brunswick and has 51 plants around the world. The company specializes in frozen food, such as desserts, French fries, oven meals, and breakfast items sold in supermarkets around the world.

Last year, McCain recalled several fries and hash browns due to pieces of metal.

Shoppers should also be aware of another recall: the recently expanded recall involving pistachios and pistachio-containing products.

Expiring tax credits in Canada that you should claim before it's too late

It’s never too early to prepare for tax season in Canada, and as the new year approaches, one expert suggests you start looking at receipts.

Tax preparation company H&R Block is urging taxpayers in Canada to check for expiring benefits and credits in time for the next filing year.

According to the financial company, several tax credits have or will soon expire, which means hundreds of thousands of Canadians risk throwing money away. It stresses that it’s important to claim these credits before it’s too late.

“The more time you give yourself to prepare, the easier it is to ensure you navigate the more than 400 tax credits and benefits, understand any that may be being phased out, and dig out old receipts so you don’t miss out on money that’s yours,” states Yannick Lemay, tax expert at H&R Block Canada.

A 2025 survey commissioned by the tax preparation company found that nearly two out of three Canadians (65 per cent) weren’t aware that they could amend their tax return from the past 10 years to claim missed benefits, deductions, or credits that they’re entitled to.

“Every year, hundreds of thousands of Canadians leave money on the table when they file their taxes,” states Lemay.

Here are the tax benefits and credits that have expired, or are expiring soon, that you can still claim.

CANADA CARBON REBATE

The consumer carbon tax was officially scrapped on April 1. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) began issuing the final payment on April 22 to eligible Canadians who had filed their 2024 income tax return electronically no later than April 2.

H&R Block says the government will no longer pay this rebate after October 2026. If you missed claiming the CCR or didn’t file your taxes from prior years, you could miss out on more than $1,000 each year.

The rebate was available to eligible individuals who filed their taxes for the applicable years: 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024.

“If you were eligible but you have not yet filed your tax return for 2024, 2023, 2022, or 2021, you are still able to receive your payments once your tax returns are assessed,” reads the CRA’s site.

The rebate was available to residents in Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI, and Newfoundland and Labrador in the form of four payments each year.

GST/HST HOLIDAY TAX BREAK

The federal government temporarily cut GST/HST on groceries, clothes, and other essentials from Dec. 14, 2024, to Feb. 15, 2025.

This means no GST/HST should have been charged at the point of sale for qualifying products during those two months.

If you noticed that you were charged GST/HST on an eligible item and weren’t able to get it refunded by the business, or the tax was already remitted to the CRA, H&R Block advises you to apply for a rebate directly from the CRA.

“If the supplier, manufacturer, or retailer does not provide a refund for the amount or is no longer in business, you can then apply for a GST/HST rebate for the amount of the GST/HST charged to you in error,” confirms a section on the CRA’s site.

Learn more about how you can apply for this rebate. You must file your application within two years after the date of your purchase.

2024 CHARITABLE DONATION DEADLINE EXTENSION EXPIRATION

The federal government extended the deadline for claiming charitable donations on 2024 tax returns up to Feb. 28, 2025. H&R Block says this means eligible donations made up to that date can be treated as 2024 donations.

“In some cases, you can claim up to 54 per cent back in your pocket, depending on your province and income level,” explains the company.

It says charitable donations are one of the most commonly missed tax credits in Canada, so Canadians should make sure they have all of their donation receipts ready for tax season.

“If you’ve missed submitting any receipts over the last 10 years, you can still claim them through a tax return amendment,” it added.

HOME RENOVATION AND ACCESSIBILITY CREDITS AMENDMENTS

As part of the 2025 Budget, the federal government announced that “double-dipping” restrictions will likely come into effect in 2026 for the Multigenerational Home Renovation Tax Credit (MHRTC) and the Home Accessibility Tax Credit (HATC). This means Canadians won’t be able to claim the same expense under both the MHRTC and the HATC.

The MHRTC could provide a valuable refundable credit for eligible expenses related to qualifying renovations to create a self-contained secondary unit for someone to reside with their family. Canadians could claim up to $50,000 in expenditures for each qualifying renovation that is completed. The tax credit is 15 per cent of your costs, up to a maximum of $7,500, for each eligible claim.

The HATC non-refundable tax credit is for eligible home renovation or alteration expenses, with an annual expense limit of $20,000. It provides a tax credit of up to $3,000 for eligible expenses to renovate or alter a home for accessibility.

H&R Block advises Canadians to speak with a tax expert to ensure they have claimed any accessibility renovations that they may qualify for using both credits while still allowed under current rules. This applies to this coming tax season and to prior applicable returns.

A Canadian couple is heading to Home Depot after winning $500,000 in the Oct. 16 Daily Grand draw.

Jo Ann and Dwayne Granger, from Sturgeon County, Alta., opted for the lump-sum payment of their prize and said they were shocked when they realized they had won.

“We scanned it in-store on a self-checker and were so surprised we asked the cashier to double-check it,” Jo Ann said. “The cashier was great and asked, ‘Well, what are you going to do now?’”

“Jo Ann said we were going to Home Depot to buy a new faucet,” Dwayne added with a laugh.

The couple said they’re looking forward to enjoying the winnings together.

“I’d been really looking forward to upgrading the faucet,” Jo Ann said. “Beyond that, we plan to share with our kids and maybe take a trip together, though we haven’t decided where yet.”

The Grangers bought their ticket at Reder Food Store, 106-80 McKenney Avenue in St. Albert. They won by matching all five numbers — 1, 6, 19, 25, 33 — in the Oct. 16 draw.

Players who match all five numbers but not the Grand Number can choose between $25,000 a year for life or a lump sum of $500,000.

Identical twin brothers from Canada make 'Jeopardy!' history

Jeopardy! fans did a double-take, thinking that one Canadian contestant had returned, but to their shock, it turned out to be his twin brother.

For Jeopardy! viewers who thought Ron Lalonde looked familiar, show host Ken Jennings explained, “If Ron looks familiar to those of you at home who are Jeopardy! fans, you’re probably thinking of his brother, Ray.”

In 2023, Ron’s identical twin brother, Ray, appeared on the show and certainly made his family proud after winning 13 games and taking home an impressive US$386,400 in winnings. The brothers were born and raised in Thunder Bay, Ont., and made Jeopardy! history as the first identical twins to appear on the show. Ray is a scenic artist from Toronto who has worked on movies and sets like The Handmaid’s Tale.

Now, it’s his brother’s turn to step up to the podium to carry on the Lalonde legacy. According to TV Insider, Ron is a medical physicist based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

“Your twin brother, Ray, called you the real Jeopardy! talent in the family, and here you are,” stated Jennings. “Those are big shoes, though.”

“Very big, yes, no pressure at all,” agreed Ron.

“Is there a way to prove that you are not, in fact, Ray Lalonde inventing a twin just to get a second crack at Jeopardy?” asked Jennings.

“He’s here,” Ron said, pointing to his brother Ray, who was seated in the audience.

Some viewers were relieved that the show cleared up the confusion.

“The way I literally thought that someone played the wrong episode tonight, until I realized his name was Ron, not Ray!” wrote one viewer.

One person recalled, “I thought I had clicked on a repeat episode and turned it off, then realized the first names were different, so I put it back on! They truly are identical!”

Another commenter wrote, “Not me yelling to my husband, ‘This guy has definitely been on Jeopardy! already! Am I losing my mind?'”

Viewers are certainly cheering for the second Lalonde brother.

“Ray has been one of my favourites, and I feel the same about his brother,” stated one commenter.

However, the twins are so identical that not everyone’s convinced that they’re not the same person.

Someone wrote, “That’s a cut, get him to the stage, and stand beside him! 😂”

“That camera cut and outfit change aren’t fooling anyone, Ray,” joked another viewer.

On Monday, Dec. 8, Ron returned for his fourth game against contestants Morgan Lloyd, from San Diego, Calif., and Will Riley, from Houston, Texas.

Penny Oleksiak explains her side of the story after Canadian Olympic legend gets banned from swimming

Penny Oleksiak is looking to set the record straight.

The Canadian Olympian hasn’t been heard from since she received a two-year suspension from competitive swimming in late November. The suspension came as a result of missing three separate whereabouts failures.

Due to her whereabouts failures, Oleksiak was also forced to withdraw from the World Aquatics Championship in July. The 25-year-old released a brief statement claiming she was a clean athlete via Instagram during the summer, but hadn’t been heard from since.

On Tuesday, that changed.

For the first time since her scandal came to light, Oleksiak joined CBC’s Devin Heroux and once again strongly denied ever using performance-enhancing drugs.

“No,” Oleksiak said when asked if she’s ever cheated. “I think it’s definitely something that the picture is kind of painted that way, because people are like, one, a whereabouts violation, which is what happened to me, gets automatically put under an automatic doping violation.

“It’s never been me to do performance-enhancing drugs or even think about doing performance-enhancing drugs. I’ve always been a clean athlete my whole career. It’s something I’ve always very strongly believed in.”

Oleksiak also explained that despite her whereabouts violations, she was still being tested on several occasions, both at home and at competitions. Nonetheless, Canada’s most decorated female Olympian is aware that this has tainted her image.

“Genuine mistake, is all I can really chalk it up to,” Oleksiak said. “At the same time, it is frustrating knowing that I have that responsibility and that I wasn’t able to uphold it to the standard that I really would.”

Oleksiak went on to explain that as an athlete, she’s required to fill her daily schedule out on an app months in advance. She, and all other athletes of her calibre, are expected to designate an hour where they are available for a random drug test on any given day.

“You have to fill out where you’re sleeping every night,” Oleksiak explained. “Just to have an hour every day where you are going to be where you say you are. Ideally, they want you to update it a minimum 24 hours before if you do want something changed.

“I had one time where I just decided to go to training in the morning instead of the afternoon. That day, they happened to come when I went to training that morning.”

Oleksiak admitted that she did briefly wonder if her career was over following her two-year ban. That mindset has since shifted, as she believes she has more big races ahead, and has her sights set on competing at the 2028 Summer Olympics.

“I’m so excited to be able to show Canadians, and even the world, where I really am at. I am at the best point in my career, while still being at the worst point of my career, essentially. All I can do is just get stronger, get faster. That’s all I’m really striving towards at this point.”

Canadian uses $50 lottery win to score an even bigger prize

An Ontario lottery player took a small win and turned it into a six-figure prize.

London resident Kevin Cowan is celebrating after playing the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation’s (OLG) newest experiential game, Instant Money Machine, and winning $100,000.

The construction worker has been a regular lottery player with the OLG for decades and especially enjoys playing instant tickets.

He said he started playing Money Machine because he noticed it was a new game. It paid off because he nabbed his first major win.

“I won $50 on another Money Machine ticket, and I decided to buy another one with that prize money,” Cowan recalled.

“I wasn’t even paying attention while checking my ticket at the store. Then I noticed the screen said, ‘Money Machine Live Event,’” he added. “My friend asked me what that meant, and I said, ‘I won the top prize!’ I didn’t even believe what I was seeing!”

On the big day, Cowan said his heart was racing before stepping into the Money Machine.

“I could hear the crowd cheering for me as I grabbed those bills. I’m still shaking from the adrenaline,” he smiled. “It’s nerve-racking in there. I can’t believe I won $100,000!”

The construction worker plans to use his lottery windfall to get ahead and to buy a puppy.

Cowan isn’t the only player who’s won big in the Money Machine. A 23-year-old Etobicoke, Ont., resident also hit the jackpot with Money Machine after only a year of playing the lottery.

Transport Canada announces recall of thousands of Ford vehicles

A massive safety risk has led Transport Canada to announce that thousands of Ford vehicles are part of a major recall across the country.

Transport Canada stated on Dec. 1 that several Ford SUVs are part of a recall due to a potentially dangerous structural issue. According to the government department, on certain vehicles, the hinge covers for the liftgate may not have been properly attached. Because of this, the cover or covers could loosen and detach from the vehicle.

“Parts that detach from the vehicle could create a hazard for others and increase the risk of a crash,” warns Transport Canada.

A total of 20,521 Ford Escape SUVs are included in the recall and affect vehicles with the model years 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2025. According to Ford, it will notify owners by mail and advise them to take their vehicle to a dealership for inspection and to secure or replace hinge covers if necessary. The company also states that any repairs as a result of a recall will be free of charge.

“Ford Motor Company of Canada Limited and Transport Canada work together to proactively identify areas of concern through investigation of consumer and dealer feedback,” states the site.

If you receive a notification letter stating that your vehicle is named in a recall, make sure to contact your Ford dealer to schedule an appointment. You can visit the Ford website or contact them at 1 (800) 565-3673 for more information.

To check if your vehicle is part of the recall, enter your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the recall website. You can find your VIN on the lower left-hand side of the dashboard, the driver’s side door, or on your vehicle registration.

In May, Ford announced the recall of 23,060 SUVs due to a potentially loose trim that could detach from the vehicle and increase the risk of a crash.

Pornhub reveals Canada's top adult entertainment habits of 2025

It’s that time of the year again when Pornhub unveils the latest data about what viewers in Canada are looking up on the adult entertainment site.

Each year, the Canadian adult online entertainment website publishes its “Year in Review,” where it shares insights on how viewer preferences shift over time.

“This year’s data goes beyond the performers and categories that captivated the most viewers, shining a light on emerging trends, international shifts, and unexpected spikes in search behaviour that transformed the adult landscape,” states the report.

“The insights reveal viral moments that captured imaginations, breakout performers who made waves, region-specific fascinations, and continually evolving attitudes toward pleasure.”

So what were Canadians watching on the site in 2025? Here’s a closer look.

CANADIAN FASCINATION

In 2024, the most-viewed category in Canada was “lesbian”; however, trends suggest that interests are shifting toward another popular category.

“In Canada, they had enough of lesbian content from last year, and this year they couldn’t get enough experienced older women, with MILF leading their most viewed category,” reads the report.

And echoing the global rise in LGBTQ+ interest, other top-viewed categories in Canada include lesbian and transgender. As for trending search terms, Pornhub saw a 426 per cent increase in searches for hyperspermia, a 391 per cent increase in searches for sex bot, and a 376 per cent increase in Asian footjob.

In other relative categories, compared to other countries, Canadians were more likely to view small tits, virtual reality, fetish, toys, and blonde.

Nationally, the number one most searched term in 2025 was Asian, followed by MILF, hentai, and Latina. Femboy also jumped six spots as the 11th most searched term nationally.

In 2024, the top adult entertainer was Australian pornographic film actress Angela White; however, she’s now in the second spot and has been dethroned by another performer.

“For the first time in Pornhub history, the top-ranked pornstar is male: Alex Adams (number one globally and in Canada),” states the company.

Globally, after Alex Adams and Angela White, other popular performers include Violet Myers, Bonnie Blue, and Lana Rhoades.

According to the report, Canadians are spending an increasing amount of time viewing porn.

While in 2024, Canadians spent an average of 10 minutes and 26 seconds on the site, they now spend an average of 10 minutes and 36 seconds on the site, an increase of 10 seconds. Canada’s average is significantly higher compared to the global average, which saw a seven-second drop to nine minutes and 33 seconds. Viewers in Japan spent the most time on the website, averaging 11 minutes and 2 seconds.

Canadians aged 25 to 34 accounted for 28 per cent of all visits – up two per cent compared to 2024.

It turns out politics and parties can also significantly impact Pornhub traffic.

An April report states that the site saw a massive drop in visitors, as over 19 million Canadians took time out of their schedules to cast their vote. But once they cast their ballots, some popular Election Day search terms centred around Canadian-themed content, such as Canada, Canadian, and Quebecoise.

There were similar dips on other major occasions.

Canada Day also saw a nearly 17 per cent drop in traffic, and on New Year’s Eve from 6 p.m. to midnight, the site experienced a 41 per cent decrease in traffic.

WHAT THE WORLD IS WATCHING

Globally, interest in specific categories overlapped, while other interests were more varied.

The most searched terms were hentai, MILF, and pinay.

Due to age verification laws in the U.S., Pornhub has blocked access to several states. Despite this, the U.S. maintained its position as the leading source of traffic, followed by Mexico, the Philippines, Brazil, and Germany.

According to Pornhub, viewer interest went beyond “not safe for work” (NSFW) content.

The podcast category saw the highest growth with an increase of 327 per cent, followed by gaming (up 238 per cent), and music (up 62 per cent). Visitors also searched terms such as SFW (safe for work), which was up 114 per cent this year, SFW ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response), and tease SFW (up 43 per cent).

Sexual Wellness Center contributor Courtney Brame, educator and founder of Something Positive for Positive People, explained that the SFW trend comes from fans wanting to see their favourite creators, whether gamers, streamers, podcasters, or performers, in regular clothes, having a conversation.

“With the way we’re seeing people lean towards novelty, perhaps there’s a shift happening that makes people gravitate toward performers out of their role as performers and in a new context,” she explained.

Visit Pornhub’s Year in Review report for details.

What to know about the latest FIFA World Cup ticket lottery

If you haven’t secured FIFA World Cup tickets for next year, your luck hasn’t run out just yet.

But you might start wanting to put some dates in your calendar, and if you haven’t already, make sure that you’ve got all your bank accounts and credit cards in order.

The next stage of FIFA World Cup tickets begins this Thursday, Dec. 11, when the entry period opens for the “random selection draw.”

This is the third of four ticket lotteries administered by FIFA, with approximately two million of the 11 million total tickets sold so far. It’s the first ticket lottery since the tournament’s schedule was revealed, following the FIFA World Cup Draw last week.

Essentially, interested buyers can put in their info for what games and dates they’d like to attend, and be thrown into a random draw should they be selected. But buyer beware: if you do get lucky, you’ll be automatically charged for your tickets in February, which means that you can’t simply select too many options if you’re not planning on actually buying them.

Signing up early “will not impact the fan’s chances of success,” as per FIFA, so it’s not necessarily something you have to rush to do, as long as you’re signed up by Jan. 13.

Fans will be able to purchase up to four tickets per match and a maximum total of 40 tickets for the tournament, per household.

Those who enter the ticket draw may be successful for any or none of their selections, hence the randomness of the draw.

The primary place to buy World Cup tickets is FIFA.com/tickets, with FIFA also launching an official resale market via the same link. However, the marketplace is currently closed in the days following last week’s group and schedule draws, and will reopen on Dec. 15.

Prospective buyers will need a FIFA ID, which is used to verify each account interested in tickets.

For other ticketing avenues, fans can also check out the CanadaRED program for Canada matches, or the FIFA World Cup official hospitality tickets for a fancier option.

If there are tickets still available after the random draw, they’ll become available to the general public on a first-come, first-served basis, with more details to come later.

Serious recall expanded for over 170,000 popular toaster ovens in Canada

If you own a toaster oven, it could be a part of a massive recall in Canada.

On Monday, the recall for Oster French Door Toaster Countertop Ovens was expanded by Health Canada due to a “burn hazard.”

“The oven’s doors can unexpectedly close, posing a burn hazard to consumers,” reads the notice.

As of Dec. 4, 2025, the public health agency says Oster has received no reports of incidents or injuries in Canada. However, in the United States, the company has received 95 reports of the doors “unexpectedly closing,” resulting in burn injuries and two reports of a second-degree burn.

Oster reported that 170,560 units of the product affected by the recall were sold in Canada, and 1.29 million were sold in the U.S. The impacted toaster ovens were sold from January 2015 to July 2025 in Canada.

“Immediately stop using the recalled product and contact Sunbeam Products Inc. to arrange to obtain a free repair kit,” advises Health Canada.

To find out if your toaster oven is part of the recall, check if its model number is any of the following: TSSTTVFDXL, TSSTTVFDDGDS, TSSTTVFDDG-033, TSSTTVFDXLPP-033 and TSSTTVFDDAF-033. You can do so by checking the backside of the oven, as well as the original packaging.

“The recalled ovens have a spring-loaded bilateral “French door” made of glass with metal handles,” reads the notice. “The four models differ in cooking options (e.g., air fryer) and control types (analog dials or digital push-button controls).”

“Oster” is engraved on the front and bottom right of the oven. You can check if your toaster oven is part of the recall at https://recall.oster.com.

To get a free repair kit, including installation instructions, you can contact Sunbeam Products Inc. toll-free at 1-800-667-8623 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or online at https://recall.oster.com or www.oster.com and click on “Product Recalls” at the top of the page for more information.

If your product is a part of the recall, Oster will ship a clip-on device directly to you for free.

The agency had initially issued a recall in Canada for the same issue in September. At the time, there were only 100,000 affected units in the country.

You can look forward to a new slate of benefit and credit payments from the Government of Canada and provincial governments next year.

According to a recent report, soaring food prices are expected to push Canadian families’ grocery bills to over $17,000 in 2026.

Unfortunately, the cost of living continues to rise. To help, benefit and credit payments are increased by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) using a process called indexation to keep pace with inflation.

In 2026, the indexation increase will be two per cent, which means some benefit and credit payments will increase by that amount. In comparison, it will be a lower hike than the 2.7 per cent increase in 2025.

Here are all of the dates in 2026 when eligible Canadians will receive these payments from the federal and provincial governments.

Study shows Canadians enjoy some of the cleanest air in the world

An air quality report shows that residents in Canada can breathe easy, as the country ranks among the top countries with clean, healthy air.

An air quality report by the Fraser Institute compares air quality across 31 Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries, and Canada ranks among the top ten countries with the best air quality.

“Overall, Canada ranks eighth for air quality among 31 high-income countries, according to our recent study published by the Fraser Institute,” reads the report.

Canada has an air quality score of 84, while Iceland takes the number one spot with an air quality score of 97.7. In comparison, the U.S. is in the 12th spot with an air quality score of 75.7, while Italy is at the bottom in the 31st spot with a score of 47.4.

Using data from 2022, “the latest year of consistently available data,” the study took a look at three important factors to assess air quality: average exposure, share of the population at risk, and estimated health impacts. It also takes into account air quality guidelines established by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME).

One important factor when determining air quality is the presence of particulates: solid and liquid droplets in the air. These particles are dangerous as they can penetrate a person’s lungs, enter the bloodstream, and cause damaging effects to our health. Air particles are caused by pollution or natural events like wildfires, dust storms, and volcanic eruptions.

But luckily, Canadians don’t have to worry about the air that they breathe.

According to a 2023 survey, seven out of ten Canadians care about the environment and breathing clean air. However, Canadians can breathe easy knowing that they’re breathing in the good stuff.

Only two per cent of Canadians were exposed to fine particle pollution levels that exceeded WHO guidelines, while Canada had the fifth-lowest estimated death and illness caused by pollution.

The report states that “Canada outperforms most comparable high-income countries on air quality, suggesting a gap between public perception and empirical reality.”

Canada introduces new Express Entry immigration category

Eligible people will soon be able to apply for a new Express Entry immigration category introduced by the Canadian government.

On Monday, Ottawa announced new measures to fill “critical labour gaps” in Canada’s healthcare system by making the path to permanent residence simpler for international doctors.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is creating a new Express Entry category for international doctors with at least one year of Canadian work experience in an eligible occupation, gained within the last three years.

The government explained that these doctors are already working in Canada and contributing to the country’s healthcare system on a temporary basis. The new Express Entry category will provide international doctors with a clear pathway to permanent residence and fill gaps in the health-care workforce.

“This dedicated Express Entry category, along with the reserved federal admission spaces for provinces and territories, will help bring in and keep practice-ready doctors, so people across Canada can get the care they need,” stated Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab.

According to the IRCC, invitations to apply to this new category will be issued in early 2026.

The Canadian government added that it will reserve 5,000 federal admission spaces for provinces and territories to nominate licensed doctors with job offers. These spots are in addition to the annual Provincial Nominee Program allocations.

Nominated doctors will receive expedited 14-day work permit processing, which allows them to work while waiting for their permanent residence approval.

“Attracting skilled health professionals is essential to addressing Canada’s health workforce shortages,” stated Minister of Health Parliamentary Secretary Maggie Chi.

“Increasing the number of qualified physicians with the expertise our health care system needs will ensure people across the country receive timely, high-quality care.”

Occupations eligible for this incoming category are general practitioners and family physicians, specialists in surgery and specialists in clinical and laboratory medicine.

Canada has been experiencing a shortage of doctors for years. Statistics Canada reported that in 2021, 4.7 million Canadians still didn’t have access to a family doctor.

In 2024, about 5.7 million (17 per cent) of Canadian adults and about 765,000 (11 per cent) of children and youth reported not having a family doctor, according to the federal government.

It was a life-changing moment for one Canadian lottery player who scored an impressive prize this weekend.

On Saturday, Dec. 6, someone managed to match the Lotto 6/49 Classic Draw winning numbers 9, 11, 15, 38, 39, and 44, with bonus 21. As a result, the winner is now $5 million richer, and, according to PlayNow.com, the ticket was sold in Ontario. Three people split the Classic Draw second prize: two in Quebec and one in Ontario. Each one will walk away with their share worth $78,478.20. A total of 79 Canadians won the third prize, and they’ll each receive $1,251.40.

Although no one won the Lotto 6/49 Gold Ball prize worth $38 million, someone did win the $1-million White Ball prize. According to WCLC, that ticket was sold in Calgary, Alta.

In B.C., someone who purchased their ticket on PlayNow.com managed to score the $500,000 Classic Draw Extra prize. However, in Ontario, no one scored the $1-million Encore top prize.

The last time someone took home the Lotto 6/49 Gold Ball prize was on Oct. 15. Stacey Boyce of Whitecourt, Alta., said he was shocked when he found out he won the $36-million top prize. He also said that when he shared the news with his daughter, she immediately asked for a pony.

The next Lotto 6/49 draw is on Wednesday, Dec. 10, and the Gold Ball prize is now at $40 million.

Over the weekend, Lotto Max players certainly had their eyes on the prize: a jaw-dropping $70-million jackpot. The winning numbers during the draw on Friday, Dec. 5, were 04, 15, 32, 34, 40, 45, and 48, with bonus 07; however, no one won the top prize.

Despite that, three people managed to match six of the seven numbers and the bonus, scoring the second prize. Each of them will receive $99,914.90, and two of the tickets were sold in Ontario and one in Quebec.

The third prize will be shared among the 54 winners, who’ll each take home $5,550.80.

There were 10 Maxmillions prizes up for grabs, but no one won during the draw.

A lottery player in B.C. did win the Lotto Max Extra Prize worth $500,000 after purchasing their ticket in Surrey. In Ontario, no one won the $1-million Encore prize.

The last time someone won the jackpot was on Oct. 28, when a lottery player won a $40-million prize. The ticket was sold in Grey County, Ont.

The next Lotto Max draw is on Tuesday, Dec. 9, and the jackpot is at $75 million with 12 Maxmillions prizes.

Opinion: Canada can achieve more new homes by building them in factories

Written for Daily Hive Urbanized by Tore Jacobsen and Baldev Gill, who are the chair and CEO of the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board, respectively.

----------------------------------------

When Prime Minister Mark Carney toured Intelligent City’s advanced manufacturing facility in Delta, B.C. this spring, it was more than just another campaign stop. It signalled that prefabricated and modular construction has moved from the margins to the mainstream of Canada’s housing conversation. That recognition is overdue.

If we are serious about tackling Canada’s housing affordability crisis by delivering more homes at scale, governments need to stop paying lip service to the huge potential of off- site construction and start putting it into policy and practice.

Prefabricated housing is not a novelty. It is a proven way to build faster, cleaner, and with precision, and has been around for decades.

The University of British Columbia’s Brock Commons Tallwood House, an 18-storey mass timber student residence, was erected in just under 70 days, demonstrating how industrialized methods compress timelines without compromising quality.

Factory construction can reduce material waste by as much as two-thirds, a meaningful advantage when every dollar counts and every landfill diversion matters. And the benefits extend beyond speed and sustainability. Off-site assembly improves safety by moving much of the work to controlled environments — improving performance and quality assurance through repeatable production.

One striking example is the nine-storey Indigenous social housing project on Frances Street in East Vancouver, which combines mass-timber construction with robotically manufactured panels. The building delivers more than 80 affordable homes, along with a childcare facility and community spaces.

Despite the promise, Canada’s prefabrication sector continues to fight headwinds. Project financing in Canada is still designed for traditional, site-built development and not for homes that take shape in factories. Lenders release funds based on what can be seen rising from the ground, rather than the value being created on the production line.

This mismatch leaves modular and prefabricated builders carrying heavy upfront costs with limited access to working capital, even as they produce completed units ready for delivery. At the same time, municipal zoning rules vary widely on things like height, setbacks, parking, and building typologies, forcing manufacturers to redesign the same home again and again.

PREFABRICATED HOUSING COULD HELP POWER CANADA’S NEXT MANUFACTURING BOOM

Combined with an unpredictable cycle of boom-and-bust demand, these barriers make it difficult for firms to invest in capacity, retain skilled workers, and achieve the economies of scale needed to make prefabrication a mainstream part of Canada’s housing solution.

Without government action, we risk building more prefabricated homes in Canada — just not by Canadians. Other countries with coordinated industrial strategies are already scaling their modular industries, positioning themselves to export factory-built housing into our market.

If governments fail to move quickly on financing, zoning harmonization, and procurement roadmaps, Canada could end up importing homes instead of manufacturing them, forfeiting thousands of potential jobs and billions in domestic investment. With natural advantages in timber, land and skilled labour, prefabrication should be a made-in-Canada solution.

To unlock the full potential of prefabricated housing, Canada needs an industrial policy that provides predictable demand, modern financing, and updated zoning.

First, governments should publish a multi-year prefabricated housing procurement roadmap. Off-site manufacturing depends on predictable, portfolio-scale demand. A provincial roadmap in British Columbia, for example, that consolidates housing needs across ministries, Crown agencies, and municipalities would give factories the confidence to invest in automation, skilled labour, and supply chains.

Second, the federal government should establish a prefab-ready lending stream within Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s (CMHC) Apartment Construction Loan Program that reflects how factory-built housing is produced.

Aligning loan draws with the factory cycle and rewarding projects that deliver affordability and energy performance would attract mainstream lenders, lower carrying costs, and accelerate purpose-built rental supply. Ottawa has already signalled openness to this approach, and it needs to make it operational.

Third, the federal government should work with the provincial governments to modernize municipal zoning to enable prefabricated housing across communities. Today’s patchwork of local bylaws forces prefabricated builders to redesign the same home for every jurisdiction, inflating costs and creating unnecessary delays.

Policy leadership can address this by standardizing key elements such as lot sizes, heights, densities, and parking ratios so that prefabricated models can be deployed consistently while still allowing local design variation. Streamlined permitting and mutual recognition of factory certifications would further reduce approval timelines without compromising safety or quality.

Together, these measures would accelerate homebuilding while strengthening Canada’s domestic manufacturing base, creating skilled jobs, and ensuring that the homes built to solve the housing crisis are built by Canadians.

It’s time to build housing faster, smarter, and more affordably.

Canadian mortgage-free at last after seven-figure lottery win

One Canadian is living every lottery player’s dream after a big win: a future of financial freedom.

Montérégie, Que., resident Marilyn San Pablo said she enjoys playing the lottery, regularly buying tickets for Lotto Max and checking the results using the Loto-Québec app. As a lottery player, she was eligible for Second Chance – Dream Big, a game open to all lottery players in Canada who had entered the promotion using their Lotto Max tickets.

San Pablo was going about her routine when she received a life-changing call from Loto-Québec informing her that she was the grand prize winner of the Dream Big promotion. They told her that she had won the $1 million jackpot in the Oct. 24 draw.

While claiming her prize at the Loto-Québec headquarters, the new millionaires shared plans for her windfall. The generous winner said she wants to share her winnings with her family, and the money will finally allow her to pay off her mortgage.

The ticket that won Marilyn San Pablo the promotion’s grand prize was purchased at the Jean Coutu pharmacy on Chemin de la Grande-Ligne in Rigaud. The retailer will receive a one per cent commission of $10,000.

The last time another Quebecer won the grand prize was in October 2024, when Jacques Poulin won the $1 million grand prize. Poulin, a Chaudière-Appalaches resident, said that news of his win left him stunned and dreaming of what he can do with his windfall. But first things first: he shared that he wanted to treat himself to a brand new car.

A woman has filed a lawsuit against WestJet after she says a crew member “bullied, embarrassed, intimidated, and demeaned” her throughout a flight last year.

Los Angeles-based actor Charlet Chung shared a statement about the lawsuit on her Instagram on Wednesday.

“Today, after much thought and consideration, I filed a lawsuit against WestJet for the outrageous treatment I received on a flight last October from Winnipeg to L.A.,” she wrote.

Daily Hive first reported this story last November. Chung had documented the incident, which went viral when she shared the footage on TikTok.

WHAT HAPPENED ON THE WESTJET FLIGHT

Chung told Daily Hive last year that it all started during the boarding process when the passenger sitting behind her began hitting and pushing her seat continuously for over 20 minutes.

Despite not saying a word when she turned around to check if an adult or a child was kicking her seat, Chung said the passenger behind her immediately expressed anger.

“Oh, just chill out. F*ck off,” she recalled him saying.

Chung said she was relieved when a flight attendant showed up at that moment so she could reach out for help. She explained the situation to the crew member, but the passenger behind her denied swearing or kicking her seat, according to Chung.

“Instead of helping me, the WestJet flight attendant sided with the white male passenger without inquiry, assumed I was the instigator, and treated me with condescension and threats,” reads the actor’s statement from this week.

“She made me leave my seat and then proceeded to bully, embarrass, intimidate, and demean me throughout the flight.”

In the TikTok video, you can see the actor mainly communicating with a flight attendant, who says her name is Tricia. The crew member insisted that Chung was being “belligerent and unruly.”

> @chihyechung See my full statement and account on my next post. This is @WestJet flight attendant Tricia. She and her crew threatened to offload and arrest me 3 times from the plane after I was cursed at by another passenger. What ensues for the next 4.5 hours was me being forced to move seats, then being isolated and harassed for the entire duration of this horrific flight. In almost 200 flights I’ve taken in the past 8 years, this Westjet crew and 2 passengers put me through the most distressing, dehumanizing experience I’ve ever had on a plane. This is the only footage I had because I was in fear. During the most aggressive moments, like when they were literally yelling at me, I was in shock and was too scared to film. What happened: During boarding, the man you see in the video was continuously hitting and pushing my seat for over 20 min. I’m in 1A and he is in 2A in back of me. I finally peeked between the seats to see what was going on but didn’t say a word and he spews out,“Oh just chill (then) FU*K OFF”. I responded by saying,“Excuse me? Did you just tell me to fu*k off?”Tricia comes over from the hallway to see what’s going on and I inform her about the man(thinking she would help me)Next thing I know, I’m being threatened to be offboarded and later, arrested. This was a 4.5hr flight of incessant abuse by the crew. The flight attendants’ relentless bullying was an agonizing experience. I was trapped. The most distressing part was not being able to stop them from talking to/harassing me while the passenger who verbally accosted me was free to do as he pleased and was fully protected. The panic attacks and flashbacks of feeling trapped and helpless on the plane and experiencing the PTSD from this aggressive crew and 2 passengers have not stopped. I have not been able to focus on anything since escaping this flight. @Westjet “Is this what you stand for?” Protect the man (who harassed me), put him on an untouchable pedestal then put me through a degrading, isolating experience for speaking up and asking for help as the victim? I will always stand up for myself (and others who may not have same voice I have) and I will not be silenced. Period. #westjet ♬ original sound – Charlet

Chung claimed that for the remainder of the trip, the other WestJet crew were “incessant” in deeming her as a threat, “isolating” and “harassing” her for the rest of the flight.

For example, the actor said other flight attendants began speaking to her “rudely” when they were serving food.

She also claimed that the crew “kept tabs” on her and that she could hear them snickering and making snide remarks about her.

The TikTok ends with Chung being given a notice explaining her potential arrest on the grounds of “verbal abuse” and “recordings.”

A YEAR AFTER THE INCIDENT

According to Chung’s statement, since the incident, the male passenger has sent her an apology letter.

“He expressed sincere regret for his inappropriate behaviour and acknowledged how terribly the WestJet flight attendant treated me. I wish him and his family no ill will,” she wrote.

She said she’s most disappointed in the airline’s reaction to the incident.

“Instead of issuing an apology, the company vilified me and branded me a liar,” wrote Chung.

She said they issued a “false press statement” and then refused to take it down when she pointed out inaccuracies.

In a rare move, the carrier released a statement on Jan. 18, 2025, addressing Chung’s allegations. It was in response to a statement the actor shared on Jan. 16, detailing the beginning of the legal battle behind the scenes.

WestJet stated that while it acknowledged her experience on board was “not a positive one for her, based on the information provided to us, her allegations of harassment and discrimination against WestJet are unfounded.”

The company went on to say that it never instructed Chung to remain silent in any form or to refrain from discussing the incident online, and it had followed instructions since November 2024 to communicate exclusively through her legal counsel.

“We have been timely and respectful in our communications on this matter, and typically refrain from addressing allegations of this nature publicly. However, Ms. Chung’s most recent comments online warrant this clarification,” the airline stated.

It’s important to note that there was no mention of the airline silencing Chung in her Jan. 16 statement. However, she did accuse the company of deleting and hiding comments on their posts.

In Chung’s latest statement, she said that she has spent over a year trying to discuss a potential resolution with WestJet, “only to be strung along and ultimately ghosted.”

“I made the difficult decision to file a lawsuit because, as I’ve said all along, I will not be bullied into silence,” she stated. “WestJet should be held accountable for its actions and corporate policies.”

The lawsuit, which was filed in a California court, is seeking over US$75,000 (C$104,000) in damages from the airline, claiming that it mishandled the incident, targeted the passenger rather than the aggressor, and issued a defamatory public statement.

PUBLIC OUTCRY FOR CHUNG

Shortly after Chung’s story went viral last year, people spammed WestJet social media accounts demanding an apology for the actor.

The same is happening now after the actor posted her latest statement.

“After watching Mrs. Chung’s video of what transpired on her horrifying flight back to LA, I will never fly Westjet!” reads one comment.

“@westjet do better. The way you treated Ms Chung was absolutely unacceptable,” added another.

Daily Hive has requested comment from WestJet and will update this story when it responds.

Here are Canada's latest travel advisories for the U.K., Italy, and France

Travel advisories issued by the Government of Canada ensure travellers have essential safety information before they venture abroad.

Each destination has a travel advisory in place that’s regularly updated by the Government of Canada. You can find the latest advice on potential health and safety risks on the government’s website.

With winter break approaching and more Canadians planning international trips, staying informed has never been more important. Whether you’re heading to popular destinations such as the United Kingdom, France, or Italy, these advisories can help you stay safe while you travel.

UNITED KINGDOM

Risk level: Exercise a high degree of caution

With its rich history and contributions to literature and music, the UK is a destination that continues to captivate travellers. But while sightseeing, it’s important to keep some travel advice in mind.

Tourists are warned of potential terrorism threats, as there have been previous attacks in the U.K. that have resulted in casualties.

“They have included random violent incidents in public areas, such as knife and vehicle attacks, as well as explosions,” reads the statement.

Theft and petty crime can also occur in tourist areas, restaurants, pubs, and bars, and tourists are advised not to leave bags or purses hanging on the back of their chairs.

In terms of health, a Nov. 21 update, Canada warned tourists of polio, an infectious disease spread from person to person and through contaminated food and water.

FRANCE

Risk level: Exercise a high degree of caution

From the Eiffel Tower to the Palace of Versailles and the Louvre Museum, France consistently ranks as a top European destination.

The risk level for France remains at yellow due to “the elevated threat of terrorism.”

The advisory site states, “Over the past few years in France, several opportunistic and premeditated attacks have occurred. These have resulted in many deaths and injuries. Further attacks are likely.”

The French government has the Vigipirate plan, which has a three-level public alert system for terrorism, and any changes are communicated online and through the media.

Tourists should also be vigilant due to petty crime, such as pickpocketing and purse and mobile phone snatching. Tourists are common targets, and petty crime often occurs on public transportation.

ITALY

Risk level: Exercise a high degree of caution

With its culture, ancient architecture, and world-class cuisine, it’s no wonder that Italy remains a popular choice among Canadian travellers. But before you go, make sure to stay up-to-date on the latest travel advice.

Canadians are urged to “exercise a high degree of caution” due to “the threat of terrorism.” Attacks have been carried out in several European cities, which means that Italy cannot be ruled out. Potential targets could include tourist attractions, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, shopping centres, markets, hotels, and other sites frequented by foreigners. Travellers must also be aware of crime, such as petty crime, burglaries, and theft.

Italy is preparing to welcome a large influx of visitors due to the Jubilee, which will take place in Rome from Dec. 24, 2024, to Jan. 6, 2026. Travellers will head to the city for pilgrimages and large-scale events, so expect large crowds, traffic, and increased presence of security forces.

Canada also has advisories in place for popular destinations such as Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Costa Rica.

Canada will play these countries at the 2026 FIFA World Cup

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is coming to Canada – and we finally know which countries will be playing on our soil.

Well, a fair number of them at least.

On Friday, at a bit of an over-the-top ceremony taking place in Washington, D.C., Canada found out two of its three group stage opponents: Qatar and Switzerland.

They’ll also play the winner of a European playoff: Italy, Wales, Northern Ireland, or Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Canada will play its opening match of Group D against one of those four teams at Toronto’s BMO Field on June 12, before travelling to Vancouver’s BC Place to play Qatar on June 18 and Switzerland on June 24.

“What an incredible opportunity this World Cup will provide our country. We now know our group opponents and will spend every opportunity preparing for the matches ahead,” said Jesse Marsch, head coach of the Canadian men’s national team.

The full schedule, with dates, locations, and times, is planned to drop Saturday morning. Of the 48 teams, 42 have qualified, with four European teams and two winners from the interconfederation playoffs still to be determined next year.

Outside of the three guaranteed matches taking place in Canada with the Canadian team matches, 10 other games will also be played across Toronto and Vancouver.

Toronto will also host one match from Group E, one match from Group I, two matches from Group L, and a round of 32 knockout match.

Vancouver will host one match in Group D, two matches in Group G, and one match each in the round of 32 and round of 16.

HOW HAS CANADA DONE AT THE FIFA WORLD CUP BEFORE?

Well, it’s been a bit of a learning experience, to put it lightly. Canada has qualified for the FIFA World Cup just twice in their history, doing so in 1986 and again in 2022.

In 1986, Canada lost 1-0 to France and 2-0 to both Hungary and the Soviet Union, bowing out of the tournament without scoring a single goal. In 2022, Canada once again dropped all three games, falling 1-0 to Belgium, 4-1 to Croatia, and 2-1 to Morocco.

Canadians could be part of new class-action lawsuit against a government agency

Canadians could be part of a class-action lawsuit alleging that the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) illegally intercepted inmates’ communications.

On Dec. 5, Proactio shared a public notice of the ongoing class-action lawsuit, ensuring eligible class members are informed. Those eligible include current or former inmates, as well as members of the public whose communications have been unlawfully intercepted.

“The Court has not decided whether Canada committed any wrongdoing,” states the notice.

THE ALLEGATIONS

Avize Law Group, which represents the class, alleges that CSC illegally intercepted inmates’ communications by telephone, mail, fax, and during visits.

The notice details that CSC allegedly allowed staff to intercept inmates’ communications, which violates the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (“Charter”) and the Crown Liability and Proceedings Act (“CLPA”).

CSC is also being accused of allegedly recording conversations using the Inmate Telephone System, “black phones,” and during visits. The agency also faces allegations that it intercepted faxes and opened privileged mail from lawyers or members of the public without authorization.

WHO’S ELIGIBLE?

You could be eligible to be part of the class action if you’re a current inmate, a former inmate, or a member of the public who communicated with an individual incarcerated at a CSC institution.

CSC allegedly incorrectly handled the correct procedures for authorized interception and recording of communications by phone, mail, fax, and visitation systems between inmates and non-inmates.

To qualify, both groups need to have been alive as of Nov. 27, 2024. The class action covers four categories of claims:

- Section 94 interceptions from Oct. 29, 1992, to Oct. 17, 2021
- Unapproved Recordings from May 23, 2012, to Nov. 27, 2024
- Mail interceptions from April 27, 2015, to Nov. 27, 2024
- Fax interceptions from August 21, 2006, to Nov. 27, 2024

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO NEXT?

For now, you don’t have to do anything. If you’re eligible, you’re automatically included in the lawsuit. Being part of the class group means you’re bound by all decisions and judgment, whether favourable or not, and you cannot sue Canada for these claims.

However, if you choose to exclude yourself from this lawsuit, you must send an opt-out form by Feb. 3, 2026.

“There is currently no money available and no guarantee that there will be any,” the notice states.

To stay informed on the status of the lawsuit, visit the Poractio website for updates.

There’s also an ongoing proposed class-action lawsuit against CSC alleging that the agency negligently permitted or failed to prevent the abuse of Black inmates in federal prisons.

Three Canadian cities rank among the worst in the world for traffic

If you’re sitting in your car on the way to work, thinking that traffic is the worst, a new ranking will likely validate your frustrations if you live in a major Canadian city.

Inrix, a transportation analytics company, released its 2025 Global Traffic Scorecard, which provides three years of transportation data that analyzes “mobility within the world’s most congested areas.”

It analyzed travel data across seven continents, 36 countries and over 900 cities to provide travel delay comparisons, cost of congestion to drivers and regions, and commuting trends.

“Traffic congestion occurs when demand for roadway travel exceeds the supply of roadways. As vehicular traffic builds, drivers, freight movers, and bus riders lose time and spend fuel unproductively,” reads the report.

Three Canadian spots made the top 100 worst traffic cities in the world.

Montreal lands in 28th place overall, but is in first place for worst congestion in Canada. According to Inrix, drivers in Montreal have lost 63 hours stuck in traffic this year, with the last mile speeds heading into downtown during the morning commute at 11 mph (18 km per hour).

Toronto isn’t far behind in 34th place overall, but in second place for having the worst congestion in Canada. Torontonians have lost 59 hours stuck in congestion this year. The slowest speed heading into downtown during the morning commute in 2025 was 10 mph (16 km per hour).

Vancouver took 59th place overall, ranking as the third-worst city in Canada for congestion. According to Inrix, drivers in Vancouver lost 46 hours in congestion, with the last mile speeds heading into downtown during the morning commute at 19 mph (30 km per hour).

Drivers in Calgary and Edmonton have it the best in Canada when it comes to congestion. Calgary took 397th place, with 24 hours lost in congestion, while Edmonton sits in 664th place with only 16 hours lost in congestion.

These Canadian stats aren’t so bad when you compare them to the top 10 worst traffic cities in the world.

Istanbul, Turkey, placed first with a staggering 118 hours lost in congestion, while Chicago followed closely behind in second place with 112 hours lost. Mexico City rounds out the top three, with drivers losing 108 hours stuck in traffic.

“In addition to lost time, negative externalities like freight delay, inflationary pressure, and environmental impact are generally exacerbated due to traffic congestion,” reads the report. “While not measured in this report, these externalities decrease our quality of life.”

Canada issues urgent recall for over 16,000 wireless earbuds

Shoppers in Canada who own wireless earbuds may want to check if theirs is part of a massive recall.

On Thursday, Health Canada issued an urgent recall for True Wireless Earbuds due to burn and fire hazards.

“The USB charging cords were manufactured with the wrong wiring material, and they may overheat when plugged in for charging, posing a burn and fire hazard,” reads the notice.

The agency says that as of Nov. 27, 2025, the company received three reports of incidents in Canada and no reports of injuries.

True Wireless Earbuds reported that 16,278 units of the affected products were sold in Canada. The recall only applies to products purchased between July 17, 2025 and Oct. 14, 2025.

The UPC for affected products, which were imported and sold at Giant Tiger stores across Canada, is 774223568363, and the SKU is 1545426, which can be found on the packaging.

“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled product and return it to a Giant Tiger store for a refund,” advises Health Canada.

True Wireless Earbuds purchased before July 17, 2025, as well as those that show a label indicating lot number 11012025, are excluded from this recall.

For more information, Canadians can contact Giant Tiger Stores Limited by telephone at 1-833-848-4437, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST, or by email at customerservice@gianttiger.com.

Canada has issued several other major recalls recently.

If you love pistachios, the list of recalled pistachio products is ever-growing.

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has recently issued a public health notice regarding the pistachio recall, showing how many people have contracted Salmonella, some of whom have needed hospitalization.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency recently recalled a tea brand sold in Canada due to “microbial contamination.”

Health Canada also issued a recall for ibuprofen sold at pharmacies across the country. The alert says the recall is due to a “presence of cloudy capsules in affected lots due to crystallization of ibuprofen into the gelatin shell.”

Canada has updated its travel advisory for Thailand with important information that tourists should be aware of.

On Thursday, Dec. 4, Canada shared additional details on the laws and culture in Thailand. Canadians are being urged to be extra careful when it comes to alcohol while visiting the popular tourist destination.

According to the advisory, tourists “must abide by local laws.” That includes laws concerning alcohol, where the legal drinking age is 20.

“It is illegal to promote the consumption of alcohol. You could be fined or taken to court for posting on social media any pictures that include alcoholic beverages or people consuming alcohol,” the Government of Canada warns.

It adds that selling, buying, and/or consuming alcohol in Thailand is restricted to certain times of the day and that tourists are expected to follow the instructions of local authorities.

“If you don’t comply, you could face heavy fines,” reads the statement.

Conde Nast Traveller reported that in 2023, a Bangkok-based man faced a suspended six-month prison term and a fine of 150,000 baht (around C$6,537.94) for sharing a review of a craft beer on social media. A Thai court had ruled that it looked like advertising for alcohol, which is illegal in the country.

The BBC reports that liquor stores, restaurants, and accredited establishments were banned from selling alcoholic drinks from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. However, that ban has been lifted, the afternoon ban as part of a six-month trial, as the country looks set to welcome more tourists during the holiday season. Previously, customers faced a fine of up to 10,000 baht (approximately C$435.92) if they violated that law.

Canadians abroad should also be careful when consuming alcohol.

Ashley King, a resident of Calgary, Alta., was travelling through Bali, Indonesia, in 2011 when she unknowingly drank a methanol-tainted cocktail in a nightclub in Kuta. The incident left her in the hospital and ultimately blind.

Canada drastically cut the number of international student permits it plans to issue and has now shared a more detailed look at what those numbers will look like across the country.

On Nov. 25, the Government of Canada announced how international student permits will be allocated under the new cap.

The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) said it would limit the total number of permits to 408,000 in 2026. That includes 155,000 new permits and 253,000 extensions for current and returning students. That total is seven per cent lower compared to the target of 437,000 in 2025 and 16 per cent lower compared to the 485,000 target in 2024.

Here’s how Canada plans to allocate the 408,000 study permits, including new arrivals and extensions, in 2026:

- 180,000 for applicants who require a provincial or territorial attestation letter (PAL/TAL), which “confirms that you’ve been assigned one of the available spaces to study in that province or territory.”
- 115,000 for primary and secondary school students who are PAL/TAL exempt
- 64,000 study permits for applicants who don’t require a PAL/TAL
- 49,000 for master’s and doctoral students enrolling at designated learning institutes. This category will be exempt from PAL/TAL requirements starting Jan. 1, 2026, in “recognition of their unique contributions to Canada’s economic growth and innovation.”

In 2026, the number of students who require PAL/TAL will make up the highest number of study permits at 180,000.

Applying for an international student permit will be much harder, but luckily, some provinces have a higher target than others.

In 2026, Ontario will have the highest target with 70,074 permits, followed by Quebec with 39,474, B.C. with 24,784, and Alberta with 21,582.

In November, Minister of Finance François-Philippe Champagne said the government plans to lower Canada’s immigration levels to “sustainable levels.”

“Our plan will restore control, will provide clarity and consistency to the immigration system, while maintaining compassion in our choices and driving competitiveness in our economy,” he said.

Cost-cutting feds send nearly 70,000 public servants early retirement notices

The federal government has begun sending Early Retirement Incentive notices to tens of thousands of public service workers as part of its plan to cut costs on operations.

In an email statement to Daily Hive, a spokesperson for the President of the Treasury Board of Canada said approximately 68,000 early retirement notices have been issued to public servants.

This is a part of the government’s Early Retirement Incentive, which was announced in Budget 2025.

“As proposed in Budget 2025, workforce reductions will be managed to the greatest extent possible through attrition and voluntary departures,” stated Matthieu Perrotin, deputy director of communications for the office of the President of the Treasury Board. “The Early Retirement Incentive is proceeding with an emphasis on voluntary, structured options to retire early with clarity and predictability.”

Canada is aiming to cut 40,000 public service jobs from their 2024 to 2023 peak of 368,000. By 2028 to 2029, Ottawa hopes to have reduced the number of public servants to roughly 330,000.

“These cuts will mean fewer services for Canadians and more pressure on the workers who deliver them,” said Sharon DeSousa, the national president of the Public Service Alliance of Canada, in a statement on Nov. 18.

“Families will see delays in getting their old age security, childcare and veteran benefits, more frustration when reaching out to CRA, cutbacks to public health and food safety, and many other signs of a government stepping back at a time they need public services to step up.”

According to the budget, the Early Retirement Incentive program is a voluntary program for public servants at age 50 or above and age 55 or above who have been working for at least 10 years, with at least two years of pensionable service. It would allow these employees to retire earlier without their pensions being penalized.

“Eligible employees will be able to retire with an immediate pension based on years of service with no penalty for early retirement,” stated the federal government.

Ottawa aims to implement the Early Retirement Incentive program Jan. 15, 2026, or when legislation receives Royal Assent. It added that it plans to finish the process within one year.

“We will continue to provide employees with updates on this work and the broader Comprehensive Expenditure Review as they become available,” stated Perrotin.

Earlier this year, we reported on the public service jobs that will be impacted the most by these cuts. According to the report by Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives senior economist David Macdonald, the hardest hit public service departments will likely be the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), Employment and Social Development (ESDC), and Citizenship and Immigration (CIC).

Canadians, you'll be paying a LOT more for food in 2026

If you think food prices in Canada are already high, brace yourself — costs are expected to climb once again in the new year.

On Thursday, Dalhousie Agri-food Analytics Lab released Canada’s Food Price Report (CFPR) 2026, which outlines how much more Canadians can expect to spend. According to the forecast, overall food prices will go up by four to six per cent. An average family of four is expected to spend $17,571.79 on food in 2026 — an increase of up to $994.63 from last year.

“The average Canadian family of four should expect to pay nearly $1,000 more for groceries next year if they follow an average diet,” reads the report.

Despite the inflation rate remaining relatively steady in 2025, food was still 27 per cent more expensive this year compared to five years ago. Not surprisingly, 85 per cent of Canadians said their food expenses have increased in the past 12 months, and that’s not likely to change next year.

“Prices are only one piece of Canada’s complex food industry story,” said Dr. Evan Fraser, director of the Arrell Food Institute at the University of Guelph. “Prices increase year over year, but reports like this one help us understand that our food sits in the middle of shifting disputes, behaviours, and policies.”

HOW MUCH CAN YOU EXPECT TO SPEND?

If you were considering a diet low in meat, 2026 just might be the time for that because meat prices are expected to go up significantly by around five to seven percent, the biggest anticipated change among all grocery categories.

Dining at restaurants is also going to be much more expensive — a projected four to six per cent increase. Vegetable prices will likely go up by three to five per cent, while baked goods, dairy, and eggs will go up by two to four per cent.

Fruit will see a modest increase of one to three per cent, while seafood will see the lowest increase of one to two per cent.

Beef continued to be expensive in 2025, and prices likely won’t normalize before 2027. Compared to five years ago, Canadians are paying an average of 23 per cent more for beef.

In all, 86 per cent reported eating less meat due to prices. To cut costs, more Canadians are substituting beef with chicken. However, the price of chicken could also increase in 2026 due to underproduction.

“Very rarely have we seen all three main components of the meat trifecta — beef, chicken, and pork — become more expensive at the same time in a single year,” states the report.

Although the Buy Canadian movement may have had some shoppers choosing local goods, for younger Canadians, price still wins out — 58 per cent of Gen Z said price matters more than a product’s country of origin.

In 2026, while a family of four can expect to spend $17,571.79 on food, a household of two people (a man aged 51 to 70 and a woman aged 51 to 70) can expect to spend $8,319.24 in 2026.

Where you live can also determine how much you spend on food in 2026.

Food price increases are expected to fall below the national average in British Columbia and Manitoba. In comparison, food prices are expected to increase to “above national average” in Alberta, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Quebec.

WHAT’S BEHIND THE RISING COSTS?

A variety of global factors will contribute to an even higher grocery bill.

The ongoing trade dispute between Canada and the U.S. will continue to affect food prices in 2026. Immigration is also a huge factor. Canada’s agricultural industry depends on seasonal workers, and a major labour shortage in this sector could see costs get passed down to consumers.

Severe and unpredictable weather could also disrupt agricultural production, resulting in “supply challenges.” Other factors that could result in higher prices include a mandate for front-of-pack labelling and the Health Canada mandate that dairy milk must be fortified with almost twice the current amount of Vitamin D.

But it’s not all bad news.

Inflation is expected to drop even further in 2026 to around two per cent. Also, a rollback on tariffs on over 200 agricultural and food products is “a promising pivot” that could help ease prices.

In addition, the One Canadian Economy Act (passed in July 2025) is expected to ease trade restrictions between provinces and territories and stimulate productivity and mobility between regions. Canadians could start to feel the impact of that in 2026.

Over 70 per cent of the national market share is controlled by the top four grocery chains. Major supermarket chains have signed the Grocery Code of Conduct, which goes into effect in January 2026. The rules ensure fairness and more transparency, but the report states that “it remains to be seen if it will be effectively enforced.”

According to the report, if 2025 was difficult for Canadian households, next year is “unlikely to be any easier.” And food insecurity is a very real issue in Canada, with 2.2 million people visiting food banks in 2025.

Fraser stated, “It remains critical that we continue to collaborate across Canada to track new trends, because affordable access to food is a matter of security.”

23-year-old Canadian hits huge lottery jackpot after only a year of playing

An Ontario lottery player in his 20s is celebrating a huge win after only a year of buying tickets.

Etobicoke resident Johnrey Pamintuan got to step inside the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation’s (OLG) newest experiential lottery game, Instant Money Machine, and win $75,000.

The 23-year-old said he’s been playing OLG lottery games occasionally for the past year, specifically buying instant tickets.

“I won a Money Machine prize and brought my ticket to the store, thinking I had maybe won $5. When I had my ticket validated, and the store clerk told me I won a Money Machine Live Event, I was shocked. I never expected that!” he told the OLG.

The skilled trades worker said he watched videos of other Money Machine winners online to prepare for his turn.

“I think I can make a lot happen in 30 seconds,” he said.

When the big day arrived, Pamintuan said he felt nervous before stepping inside the Money Machine. His friends and family were there to cheer him on.

“All I could hear was the sound of the bills flying around. I never expected to win this much money. It’s wonderful and unbelievable,” he recalled.

Pamintuan has important plans for his lottery windfall. He wants to put his winnings towards his education and will also share them with his mom.

“I see all the sacrifices she has made for me throughout my life, and I’m so happy to take care of her,” he concluded with a smile.

The 23-year-old bought his winning lottery ticket at Rabba Fine Foods on Dundas Street West in Etobicoke.

Flair Airlines just made a huge new upgrade for certain travellers

Those long lines to measure your carry-on may be a thing of the past for some travellers, with Flair Airlines launching a new perk just in time for holiday travel.

Today, the Edmonton-headquartered ultra-low-cost carrier launched Flair Express: a new, system-wide upgrade that promises quicker, more streamlined service for travellers.

Any traveller who buys a carry-on bag, whether on its own or as part of a Lite or Max bundle, will automatically get Flair Express benefits.

That includes dedicated check-in lines, priority boarding through a separate Flair Express lane, and fewer bag checks, with carry-ons only being measured if they’re clearly oversized.

“Canadians deserve travel that adapts to them, not the other way around,” CEO Maciej Wilk said in a statement, adding that Flair Express is meant to cut stress, reduce wait times, and “deliver on our Flair FWD promise to make Flair the easiest airline to fly.”

The update is part of its broader Flair FWD strategy announced by the airline earlier this year. Other changes coming include four simplified fare bundles (Basic, Lite, Plus and MAX) and a partnership with Fairlyne that makes Flair the first airline in North America to offer secure ticket resale for unused seats.

What to expect from the Bank of Canada's final interest rate update of 2025

The Bank of Canada (BoC) is set to announce the final interest rate update of the year next Wednesday.

Canada’s central bank lowered the key interest rate by 0.25 points from 2.5 to 2.25 per cent in October.

The interest rate drop came after another drop in September, when the Bank of Canada lowered the lending rate by 0.25 points from 2.75 to 2.5 per cent.

One expert predicts that the crown corporation will “settle into a holding pattern” to close out 2025.

“Its Governing Council clearly indicated they feel the current policy rate level is right to support the economy and temper inflation, while also pointing out that monetary policy can only do so much while businesses adapt to the current trade scenario,” explained Penelope Graham, Ratehub.ca mortgage expert. “Fiscal support will be needed to support affected industries, rather than lower interest rates alone.”

She added that the latest economic outlook suggests the likelihood of a December rate hold. Despite October inflation numbers coming in stronger than the bank expected, Graham said they’ve indicated they believe the upward pressure is beginning to ease, with overall inflation sitting at around 2.5 per cent.

“This is over the Bank’s target, and presents a roadblock to any further cuts at this time, but is also unlikely to cause a hike as the Bank expects shelter and goods costs to continue to ease, and that the removal of Canadian counter tariffs will also keep a lid on price growth,” she said.

HOW THE BANK OF CANADA INTEREST RATE UPDATE COULD AFFECT MORTGAGES AND HOUSING

According to Graham, despite the housing market lagging behind last year’s levels, buyer demand has increased steadily over the past six months.

“Home prices, meanwhile, have yet to re-heat, and plenty of available inventory has made for buyer-friendly conditions in most Canadian markets,” she explained.

“While economic uncertainty continues to impact buyer psychology, today’s relatively good affordability conditions will continue to support slow market recovery.”

When it comes to mortgage rates, Graham stated that it’s unlikely variable mortgage rates will decrease in the near future.

It’s not all bad. She added that current variable rate pricing is still the best it’s been since 2022, with five-year terms as low as 3.45 per cent.

“Home prices, meanwhile, have yet to re-heat, and plenty of available inventory has made for buyer-friendly conditions in most Canadian markets,” said Graham. “While economic uncertainty continues to impact buyer psychology, today’s relatively good affordability conditions will continue to support slow market recovery.”

The Bank of Canada will drop its last interest rate update for 2025 on Wednesday, Dec. 10.

Pistachio lovers across Canada are fed up with growing list of recalled products

Pistachio lovers across Canada are going through it, and it’s not just emotional turmoil over the recent recalls.

In case you missed the news, over the last year, the number of pistachios and pistachio-containing products has continued to grow, and many people are starting to get fed up. But growing frustrations aren’t the only thing affecting Canadians.

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has recently issued a public health notice regarding the pistachio recall, showing how many people have contracted Salmonella, some of whom have needed hospitalization.

OVER 150 PEOPLE SICK

Throughout this year, pistachios from Iran and products made with pistachios from Iran have been recalled due to Salmonella contamination, resulting in over 150 people getting sick and 24 hospitalized.

According to PHAC, Quebec leads the pack with 77 cases, while Ontario follows at 58. B.C. has reported 9 cases, Alberta has 7, Manitoba has 3, and New Brunswick has 1.

“People became sick between early March and mid November 2025. Of the cases reported, 24 people have been hospitalized and there have been no deaths. People who became sick are between 1 and 95 years of age. The majority of sick individuals are female (70%),” said PHAC.

PHAC also added that many who became sick reported eating pistachios and products containing pistachios, such as Dubai-style chocolate and pastry products.

“The outbreak strains of Salmonella that made people sick were found in samples of recalled pistachios and samples of the recalled Dubai-style chocolate. The investigation is ongoing and it is possible that additional sources may be identified,” said PHAC.

CANADIANS ARE FED UP

With all the recalls, many have taken to social media to share their frustrations.

“It may be easier for the media to list foods that aren’t tainted since the numbers seem to be far less lately,” said one user online in response to a post about a pistachio recall.

“For real? What is up with all these recalls? Are we really doing worse than the us in making sure the food supply is good? I know we aren’t the greatest, but being worse than the US in this space is just wrong,” responded another.

Some people have gone to avoiding pistachios altogether. In another Reddit post, a user shared, “Personally, I stopped eating anything with pistachio several months ago. Recall after recall, it just isn’t worth the risk until it stops.”

“I wouldn’t eat anything with pistachios right now. No idea if they are part of the ones coming with foodborne pathogens on them. This is good advice, especially if you are elderly, pregnant or immunocompromised. There have been so many recalls that the government now just has a big page they add to,” added someone else.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO NOT GET SICK

Since Sept. 27, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has temporarily banned the import of pistachios and pistachio-containing products from Iran as a precautionary measure to prevent the possibility of new contaminated products from entering the Canadian marketplace.

Additionally, the CFIA made it mandatory for all federally licenced importers and manufacturers that have Iranian pistachios that were imported prior to Sept. 27 to hold and test them for Salmonella before they can be sold in Canada, including products that were made with pistachios from Iran that are not already recalled.

Due to pistachios’ long shelf lives, products purchased months ago may still be in your pantry. PHAC recommends checking recall listings to see if your product is affected.

If you have affected products, you’re told not to consume, serve, use, sell, or distribute them, as well as not to use them in cooking or baking, because heat may not kill Salmonella in pistachios. Instead, throw out or return recalled products to their place of purchase.

Additionally, even if you have pistachio products that are not part of the recall, PHAC encourages you to check the label for the country of origin and to avoid the product if it is from Iran or if the country of origin can’t be confirmed.
