Second round of thundersnow in Alberta includes shelf clouds (PHOTOS)

The last week of February sure is bringing a lot of wild weather to Alberta.

We’ve experienced meteors, snow, balmy temperatures, hail, and lightning over the past few days, and now Albertans can add some scary-looking clouds to the list as well.

After the thundersnow storm on Monday evening, southern parts of the province, including Calgary, saw a second round of the phenomenon on Tuesday – and this time it included shelf clouds.

Shelf clouds are wedge-shaped formations that hang low in the sky, typically seen forming in front of intense lines of thunderstorms.

According to The Weather Network, these clouds are a sight normally associated with warmer-weather thunderstorms, rather than with winter events.

We couldn’t tell you why they’re forming this time of year, but what we do know is that shelf clouds sure look cool, especially when leading the thundersnow.
