Federal government launches website to help Canadians find financial help

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the launch of a new online tool to help Canadians find the financial program to best assist their needs during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new online tool asks a series of simple questions like what province or territory you are from, if financial income was stopped or reduced, the means of the reduction in salary, and if you will struggle to pay rent or mortgage payments.

“People are going through a period of uncertainty and life was turned upside down over night,” Trudeau said on Friday, during his daily press conference.

“We have put in certain measures for those who need help by offering this new online tool, which will give a list of programs you are eligible for.”

Since the start of the pandemic, the federal government has been creating financial aid programs to help those who have lost their jobs, or now have significantly reduced hours.

Some of the most notable programs are the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB), the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS), the Canada Emergency Student Benefit (CESB), and the Canada Child Benefit to name a few.

But the prime minister pivoted his speech at the end of his press conference with a sobering message for Canadians during this difficult period, by addressing the “significant increase in acts of racism against Asian Canadians.”

“Businesses, buildings, and statues have been vandalized. People have been verbally abused and physically attacked. It’s unacceptable,” Trudeau said.

He emphasized that hate, violence, and discrimination have no place in Canada.

“This is not who we are. Thank you to those who are standing up against violence and exposing whats happening in our communities.”

Trudeau said that he and all Canadians stand with the Asian Canadian community and will not allow hate to divide the country.
