Canada's total COVID-19 case count surpasses 700,000

Canada has now seen over 700,000 total COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began almost a year ago in March 2020.

The country surpassed the bleak milestone on January 16, as 702,183 cases were reported.

Canada’s case count grew by more than 100,000 in just two weeks, as 600,000 cases were only confirmed on January 3.

Quebec has seen the most coronavirus cases of any province or territory, with 240,970 cases reported as of 7 pm on January 16, when the federal government’s COVID-19 dashboard was last updated.

Ontario has the second-highest case count with 234,364, followed by Alberta with 116,087 cases. British Columbia has reported 60,117 COVID-19 cases.

To date, Manitoba has reported 27,322 COVID-19 cases, and Saskatchewan has seen 19,985. Nova Scotia has confirmed 1,554 cases as of January 16.

While some provinces have seen hundreds of thousands of coronavirus cases, others have yet to surpass 1,000.

New Brunswick has reported 911 cases to date, Newfoundland and Labrador has seen 395 cases, and Nunavut has seen 266.

There have been 104 COVID-19 cases in Prince Edward Island since March 2020. Seventy virus cases have been reported in Yukon, and 25 in the Northwest Territories.

There are currently 76,234 active coronavirus cases across the country.
