Awesome Alberta: Nature will treat you like royalty at Castle Falls (PHOTOS)

COVID-19 still presents a very real and dangerous threat to public health. While much of Alberta’s outdoors have been reopened to visitors, it is recommended to plan ahead, check local restrictions and current public health measures, and avoid any areas that may be too crowded.

Come be the queen — or king — of the castle at Alberta’s Castle Falls this summer.

If you are looking for an off-the-grid area to get away with your hubby or a group of friends this is the place. The falls are a crisp, clear blue, and they’re ready for you to take them on during a scorching summer day!

If you’re an avid swim hole enthusiast, you’ll love these waters, as they make for the perfect place to cool off, while their somewhat-hidden nature will ensure that the falls aren’t too crowded — though keep in mind that if the river is running too fast, we’d recommend merely hanging on the rocks instead.

For your own safety, please make sure you are prepared before heading out on your next adventure. Information on how to prepare for your trip and stay safe while on your hike is available from Albertaparks.ca and AdventureSmart. Parks Canada visitor guidelines are available here. Always remember to leave no trace, pack out what you pack in, stick to designated trails, and refrain from feeding wildlife — and please note that irresponsibly taken selfies (even if they look great for the ‘gram) can be fatal

Where is it?

Castle Falls is located south of Calgary and east of Cranbrook, just off the BC-Alberta border.

How do you get there?

From Calgary you can hop onto AB-2 south, then make a right onto AB-540 west in Cayley. Follow that to AB-507 south in Lundbreck for an hour and then take AB-774 to Castle Falls road. It’ll take three hours total, or 5.5 hours from Edmonton.

What’s there?

Once you make the drive over, you can park at the campground, grab your fishing gear — or bathing suit — and head over to the falls where you can make a spectacular splash. If you aren’t the active type, no worries! The falls are lined with smooth layered rocks that make for perfect lounging material.
