Canadian rapper Tory Lanez calls out those condemning looting

Canadian rapper Tory Lanez has no time for people condemning the looting that’s happened alongside George Floyd protests this weekend, and called on his celebrity peers to use their platforms to support calls for justice.

As demonstrations protesting Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police erupted across the continent this weekend, some turned violent as police clashed with demonstrators and many stores were looted.

Lanez asked people to understand the anger black people are feeling before calling out anyone for vandalizing businesses.

“I’m really appalled right now at a lot of my peers and some of my celebrity friends that are coming out with the statements like why y’all burning down our businesses… why y’all doing Target this way,” Lanez said on Instagram live.

“If you haven’t gone outside and been there … and understanding the pain and hunger that [black people] are going through, you shouldn’t have anything to say right now.”

The rapper grew up in Toronto but has been living in the US for the last nine years. After speaking to fans on Instagram, he shared a video from a Justice for Floyd protest he’s participating in.

Floyd died this week after police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for several minutes while arresting him, failing to move even after Floyd said he couldn’t breathe. Chauvin has been charged with manslaughter and third-degree murder.
