The Weeknd reportedly boycotting Grammys from now on

The Weeknd is boycotting future Grammy Awards after being shut out of this year’s nominations.

In a statement issued to The New York Times, the Canadian artist said he would no longer allow his label to submit his music to be considered for a Grammy. He added the secret committees that choose who gets nominated are unacceptable to him.

The Toronto singer released his massively successful album After Hours in 2020 and played the 2021 Super Bowl half time show — a huge honour and mark of both popularity and talent.

But despite that, the Weeknd wasn’t nominated for a single Grammy this year. Back in November, he called the institution “corrupt.”

Daily Hive has reached out to the Weeknd’s record label for comment.

Several artists have levelled accusations of racism against the awards before, including Drake in 2017. He questioned why his record “Hotline Bling” won in two rap categories even though it’s a pop song.

“When it comes to everything else, I’m Black. I am referred to as a Black artist,” Drake told DJ Semtex in an interview at the time. “The only category that they can manage to fit me in is in a rap category, maybe because I’ve rapped in the past or because I’m Black.”

That was the same year Adele’s album 25 was chosen over Beyonce’s Lemonade, and the UK singer used her acceptance speech to question why.
