Sweet Tooth: Rolled ice cream has a new home in Calgary

Sep 28 2016, 11:18 pm

Autumn, schmatumn. It’s always a good time for ice cream. Sure, summer’s heat is gone for now, but that doesn’t mean you don’t crave cold treats. If you are looking for something to shake up your ice cream game, head to the recently-opened Sweet Tooth Ice Cream, Calgary’s first permanent shop dedicated to rolled ice cream.

Rolled ice cream is made by flash-freezing the base on a sort of freezing griddle, and it’s then scraped into rolls. The rolls are arranged in a cup and toppings are added. Think all sorts of textures and colours, from crushed fruit loops to marshmallows or toasted coconut, and syrups and drizzles. You’ll watch your treat come together before your very eyes.

Customers can get inventive with topping and flavour combos, or you can go for their pre-set concoctions, like the London Fog (Roasted Earl Grey ice cream topped with crushed fruit loops, and drizzled with honey and chocolate syrup, with whipped cream) or their specials, such as a recent collab with The Chocolate Lab.

For fall, look for their forthcoming Great Pumpkin, which is a pumpkin and chai spice rolled ice cream topped with toasted organic granola, flax seeds, sunflower seeds and a caramel sauce drizzle.

Also on the menu are macaron ice cream sandwiches…and, yes, you can get them with a panda macaron, and other whimsical creations from Happy Desserts House.

Sweet Tooth is open from noon to 10 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and from noon to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
