Sears Canada announces plans to reimburse some warranty holders

More than three years after permanently shutting its doors, Sears Canada has announced plans to reimburse some past customers.

According to the company’s court-appointed monitor, customers who hold a Sears Canada warranty and have paid out-of-pocket for the repair or service of a product may be entitled to financial compensation.

To be eligible, the warranty must have been issued before June 22, 2017, and have been valid at the time of the repair.

As well, the fix must have been something that would have been covered under the item’s warranty, and the customer can’t have been previously reimbursed.

This does not apply to any manufacturer’s warranties, FTI Consulting Canada Inc. clarified in a release.

Sears Canada has established a $9 million “Warranty Reimbursement Pool” for any claims that are approved by FTI Consulting.

Customers must submit proof of their claim before 5 pm EST on June 12, 2021, in order to qualify for any partial or complete reimbursement.

Following multi-million dollar losses and a failed reinvention plan, Sears Canada closed its nearly 200 stores for good in 2017.
