Rick Mercer calls out Burnaby Conservative candidate for false endorsement post

Comedian Rick Mercer is calling out a Burnaby Conservative candidate and a group of her supporters for altering one of his quotes and sharing it on social media.

The Burnaby North Seymour Conservative Constituency Association  — which supports the riding’s Conservative candidate Heather Leung — shared a meme of Mercer making it seem like he was endorsing the party. The post has since been deleted from the page.

The meme used a quote from Mercer’s 2011 CBC rant, which encourages young people to head to the polls and vote.

The Burnaby North Seymour Conservative Constituency Association appears to have doctored the quote by adding the words “Vote Conservative” to the end of it.

Mercer was made aware of the altered quote on Twitter, and confirmed that it was “not real” and just a “straight up fake.”

He also notified Conservative Party Leader Andrew Scheer that Leung was “distributing a meme on social media with [his] face and the worlds ‘Vote Conservative’ indicating it is a quote from [him].”

“Not true. All fake. Please stop,” he wrote.

Daily Hive has reached out to Leung’s office for comment but did not hear back by time of publication.
