Former RCMP employee facing multiple charges under the Security of Information Act

A senior RCMP employee has been arrested and charged, the RCMP confirmed on Friday morning.

According to a statement from police, Cameron Ortis is facing multiple charges under both the Criminal Code and the Security of Information Act.

Police said the charges stem from activities “alleged to have occurred during his tenure as an RCMP employee.”

The charges fall under sections relating to “unauthorized communication of special operational information” – including “obtaining, retaining, or gaining access to any information.” He also faces charges under the SOIA relating to the commitment of fraud in connection with his duties.

This includes “possessing any device, apparatus, or software useful for concealing the content of information or for surreptitiously communicating, obtaining, or retaining information.”

Police confirmed Ortis was charged under:

  • Section 14(1) of the Security of Information Act
  • Section 22(1)(b) of the Security of Information Act
  • Section 22(1)(e) of the Security of Information Act
  • Section 122 of the Criminal Code
  • Section 342.1(1) of the Criminal Code

Police said that as the investigation is ongoing, “we will not be making any other comment at this time.”
