Anyone who loves reading Vogue or follows Victoria Beckham on Instagram has probably wondered what it’s like to be a fashion designer: to create bold and intricate pieces, to channel creativity with every workday, and to ultimately launch a brand that represents everything you believe in.

But where do you start? How can you showcase your creations on the runway at the fastest growing fashion week in the world, Vancouver Fashion Week?

The thing is, you don’t need to have a natural flair for pattern-making or sewing to become a designer — these skills are developed during your studies. There are currently only four schools in Canada that offer a Bachelor of Design in Fashion Design, and LaSalle College Vancouver (LCV) is one of them. This is what it means to study in this sought-after program.

Showcase your debut collection at a coveted event

Studying at LCV opens up a plethora of opportunities for the aspiring designer, including the chance to show at Vancouver Fashion Week. On October 10, 2019, LCV presented its 21st student designer show at the bi-annual event, with a selection of incredible garments for the Spring/Summer 2020 season.

Fashion Design students worked on a series of illustrations and design boards, and six were chosen to represent LCV with their collections at Vancouver Fashion Week: Charlie Kim, Eduardo Lozano-Ramos, Mojgan Razani, Simge Senol, Nicole Mo, and Elie Jesmani. These young designers introduced their works to the world alongside local and international emerging and established designers.

Learn from industry insiders

LCV’s teaching model goes back to its roots in Canada’s fashion capital, Montreal. It gives students a hands-on learning experience of tailoring, advanced textiles and technologies, and much more. The degree also has classes led by fashion experts that are geared towards the business side of the industry, such as brand management, global sourcing and trade, entrepreneurship, and consumer behaviour.

For instance, LCV’s interim program director of fashion, Emily M. Palmquist, has studied and worked in fashion all over the world. Today, she mentors those who are interested in developing their future in the creative industry.

During the course of study at LCV, students develop strong theoretical and practical knowledge of everything from drafting to fashion illustration, sewing, textile science, the fundamentals of fashion design, academic writing, portfolio development, 3D exploration draping, sustainable design, and much more — all with a strong focus on menswear and womenswear.

Design costumes for TV and film

If watching Game of Thrones has taught us anything, it’s that era-specific costumes are integral to a great production. Studying a Bachelor of Design in Fashion Design could lead to a lifelong career in costume design for film, TV, or stage, as students cover modules that help to advance and hone their skills.

Since Vancouver has been dubbed Hollywood North, BC is a wonderful place to base yourself to pursue a career in costume design. Of course, Broadway shows in New York City need stellar costume designers, too — meaning where you work once graduated is pretty much up to you.

At LCV, students gain invaluable industry experience with a three-month practicum during their degree. This gives you the opportunity to work for a brand or designer you’re passionate about and discover tips for success while developing your skills working directly in the industry.
