In Ontario, the median size of a detached house is 1,520 square feet. In Vancouver, it’s 1,430 square feet. At 110,000 square feet, this Hamptons mega-mansion is about 75 times bigger.

Located in the village of Sagaponack, the vast size of the estate makes it not only the largest residential home in New York State but in all of the United States, according to home services site Angi.

It dwarfs the second-largest home in the country by 5,000 square feet and is twice the size of the White House.

Known as Fair Field, the home is owned by businessman Ira Rennert. Reports differ, but it has somewhere between 21 and 29 bedrooms and between 18 and 39 bathrooms.

According to Luxtionary, there are three swimming pools, two tennis courts, a synagogue, a 164-seat theater, a basketball court, and a bowling alley. The garage can hold 100 cars. The dining room can seat 105 people. There’s even a power plant on the property.

The residence itself is just 62,000 square feet, but the six to seven buildings throughout the complex amount to 110,000 square feet.

Rennert began constructing his dream home in the 1990s, and Fair Field was move-in ready in 2004. It cost around US$110 million to build and was valued at $249 million upon completion; estimates of Rennert’s net worth range from $3.7 billion to $5 billion.

A home of this caliber is not without controversy. Luxtionary writes that representatives of a defunct mining company that Rennert used to own claimed he looted the business in order to finance Fair Field. In February 2018, he was ordered to pay US$118 million in damages.

The property has also drawn ire from its Sagaponack neighbours.

They’ve had issues with the path of Rennert’s helicopter, his desire to build a 10,000-square-foot museum on the property (to house his $500 million art collection), and his request to add a pilates studio to one of the pool houses.

Local residents also fear that Rennert will eventually convert the property into a conference centre or resort once it outlives its life as a private residence.

Regardless of what Fair Fields turns into, there won’t be another property to rival it.

Luxtionary writes that after it was constructed, the town passed a new zoning ordinance that restricts residential dwellings to a maximum of 20,000 square feet of residential space, excluding basements.
