An outbreak of Cyclospora infections in three provinces has been linked back to Fresh Express-brand salad products.
As of July 8, 2020, an active outbreak investigation linked to these nationally recalled salad products has caused 37 Cyclospora infections in Ontario (26), Quebec (10) and Newfoundland and Labrador (one).
Individuals became sick between mid-May and mid-June. One individual has been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported, and the outbreak appears to be ongoing.
The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) is collaborating with provincial public health partners, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), and Health Canada to investigate.
“Some of the individuals who became sick reported having eaten certain Fresh Express brand salad products containing iceberg lettuce, red cabbage and carrots before their illnesses occurred. The source of illness for the remaining individuals continues to be under investigation,” reads the statement.
On June 28, 2020, the recall was issued for certain Fresh Express salad products containing iceberg lettuce, carrots, and red cabbage that were distributed nationally in Canada.
The recalled salad products begin with lot code “Z177” or a lower number and have best before dates up to and including 20JUL08 – 20JUL14.
It is recommended to check to see if you have the recalled products in your home. If you do, they should be thrown out or returned to the store where they were purchased.

Food contaminated with Cyclospora may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Those infected can experience a wide range of symptoms, including watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, and nausea.
Some people do not get sick at all, while others suffer from a severely upset stomach. Few people get seriously ill.
This recall was triggered by Fresh Express, and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is conducting a food safety investigation which may lead to further recalls. If other high-risk products are recalled, the public will be notified through further warnings such as this one.
