Communities around the world continue to feel the impact of the COVID-19 crisis, and those in Canada are no exception. Things have moved quickly since the first case of the virus in the country was reported in January.

In April alone, nearly two million Canadians lost their jobs as a result of the pandemic. Now more than ever, those in need are facing even greater financial and personal hardships. One of the world’s leading brewers recognizes this and is stepping up to help with the launch of its new initiative.

The program, Buy a Carlsberg and support The Good Access Fund, aims to help the community in this difficult time of need. For the entire month of June, Carlsberg will donate $0.20 for every bottle and can of Carlsberg Danish Pilsner sold in Canada to Community Food Centre Canada (CFCC).

“The coronavirus pandemic is affecting everyone’s way of life but is significantly felt among the less fortunate,” John Porter, managing director of Carlsberg Canada said in a press release. “We realize that now is the time to focus our efforts on supporting Canadians and letting the community know that we are here to help.”

Carlsberg’s goal for the initiative is to sell, at minimum, 500,000 bottles and cans of its beer with the hopes of making a charitable donation of at least $100,000 to CFCC. The brewer is also pledging to raise awareness of the work CFCC is doing nationally through Carlsberg’s social media channels.

As an organization with over 200 partners, CFCC builds responsive and dynamic community food centres and food programs. Its mission is to help support people to eat well and connect with their neighbours, and to contribute to a more just and inclusive Canada through advocacy and mutual support.

CFCC is making a positive difference in the lives of many Canadians by building health, a sense of belonging, and social justice in low-income communities through the power of food.

The organization established The Good Food Access Fund in March to ensure that partners working on the frontlines nationwide can buy the food and supplies needed to support Canada’s most vulnerable. Already, the fund has granted almost $10 million to more than 400 organizations in cities across the country, allowing for the expedited purchase of these essentials.

Initiatives like this fund are integral to help feed those in need in Canada during a time when food banks are struggling to keep up with the increased demand for service and food supplies.
