Canadiens' Max Domi might not return for playoffs due to diabetes
The Montreal Canadiens and Max Domi are going to wait before deciding if the star forward will join his teammates for the restart of NHL hockey.
Domi has Type 1 diabetes, so playing during a pandemic has increased risks for him.
Training camp will start on Monday without Domi, as GM Marc Bergevin and his star forward have agree to wait for a 7-to-10 day period before making a decision on his status.
“Both parties have agreed to take this responsible approach and to take this time to evaluate the ongoing situation, in order to make the best decision for Max’s health at the end of this period,” the Canadiens said in a statement.
Domi was third in team scoring with 44 points in 71 games when the league paused operations in March, one year after leading the Habs in scoring with 72 points in 82 games.
Needless to say, an absent Domi would make the task of upsetting the Pittsburgh Penguins in a best-of-five series much more difficult for the Canadiens. It would be completely understandable though.
Players have until Monday to decide to opt out of the NHL’s return this summer, for any reason and without penalty. A sprinkling of players have decided to opt out, for various reasons, including Canadiens defenceman Karl Alzner.
