Canada to unveil updated coronavirus projections today: Trudeau

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that updated national COVID-19 projections will be unveiled on Monday afternoon.

Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer, Dr. Theresa Tam, will release the latest public health modelling in full detail.

But, Trudeau said the main takeaway from the latest data is after a “challenging” spring, numbers are continuing to move in the “right direction,” but hotspots still remain in the country.

“Numbers are declining over time because Canadians are doing their part. You took this seriously and made sacrifices,” Trudeau said.

Overall, there has been a continued decline in new cases, hospitalizations, and deaths.

The prime minister said over the coming weeks the government will continue to keep updating Canadians on how the virus is progressing.

Now, Tam will provide an update on the pandemic a few times a week instead of through daily briefings. But, the data will be updated online daily.

“The fight is not over yet, we must continue to follow local public health guidelines,” Trudeau said.

The prime minister also announced that the Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance program will be extended by one more month.

The program allows local businesses to pay less for their rent and help business owners who are having problems with cash flow.

The Rent Assistance program was initially announced in April as a rent relief program to help businesses who are struggling to pay their landlords due to the coronavirus pandemic — applications opened in May.

The program allows the federal and provincial governments to help cover 50% of the rent, with tenants and landlords paying the remaining amount evenly.
