A couple has been charged in a “severe” case of child neglect after their adult son was found weighing less than 50 pounds.

In a release, the Calgary Police Service said that on October 24, 2020, the man’s parents, on whom he is dependent for care, found him unresponsive in his bedroom at their Falconridge home.

He was subsequently taken to hospital, where police say he was admitted in acute medical distress stemming from parental neglect.

According to the release, the man is 27-years-old and weighed 43 pounds.

“The victim suffered from a medical condition and was completely dependent on his parents for all his basic needs,” said Staff Sergeant Vincent Hancott of the force’s Domestic Conflict Unit.

“It is believed his parents failed to provide him [with] necessary care, progressing to the point where his life was in danger.”

The victim is currently recovering in a long-term care facility, according to the release.

On January 13, Calgary Police charged Jonathon Grunewald, 52, and Malinda Phillips, 47, with one count each of failing to provide the necessaries of life and negligence causing bodily harm. They are scheduled to appear in court next month.

Hancott said it was a frontline healthcare worker who alerted them to the “very serious” situation.

Police ask anyone with information to contact their non-emergency line at 403-266-1234 or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

“We recognize this is a difficult time for everyone, and many people in our city are struggling,” said Hancott. “However, caregivers remain obligated to ensure the proper care of those who are dependent upon them for their safety and wellbeing.”

“If you’re struggling, please reach out and access available resources.”
