Canada has its first Grand Slam singles champion.

After a battle with one of the best tennis players of all time, Bianca Andreescu defeated Serena Williams in straight sets, winning 6-3, 7-5.

It was a match for the ages, one of those “where were you when” moments.

And the Mississauga, Ontario native didn’t disappoint.

Beyond just the historical significance however,  the victory brought Andreescu something else too: The biggest paycheque of her career.

According to Forbes, the win netted Andreescu $3.85 million for the championship – more than her total career earnings until this point.

And the 19-year-old did it in the most unimaginable way possible too, beating 23-time major champion Williams and stopping her from tying Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24.

Heading into her match with Williams, Andreescu’s total career winnings totalled $2.5M before this – including the $519,480 she won in the Rogers Cup.

Had she lost the match, Andreescu still would have been set to receive about half that amount – about $1.9 million.
