A $50-million 27-kilometre 'green corridor' is coming to Montreal

The City of Montreal has announced plans to turn the stretch of land between Parc de Saraguay to Parc Angrignon into a ‘green corridor.’

The corridor will stretch for 27 kilometres, and it will consist of a bike path, hiking trails, and meadows. Montreal says the creation of the green space is “part of the city’s adaptation strategies to climate change.”

The green corridor would connect the following boroughs together, Ahuntsic-Cartierville, Côte-des-Neiges – Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, Lachine, LaSalle, and Saint-Laurent.

The cost of the 27-kilometre long stretch is expected to be $50 million, $10 million of which will come from Hydro-Québec as part of the initiative.

Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante says the joint venture with Hydro-Québec is a result of the company having “a lot of space” under the company’s infrastructure.

Parts of the corridor will stretch across streets, residential parks, highways, and train tracks.

Plante says, “in some places, we might think of building a small bridge as a detour, but it will be one long continuous park.”

Landscaping for the green corridor is expected to begin in 2023.
