1. 20 million people in 4 countries suffering from starvation: UN
A new report from the UN has found that over 20 million people in four countries are starving or suffering from famine. Stephen O’Brien, UN’s Emergency Relief Coordinator, says the situation in Kenya, Yemen, South Sudan, and Somalia needs the world’s attention. “We stand at a critical point in history. Already at the beginning of the year we are facing the largest humanitarian crisis since the creation of the UN,” said O’Brien,

2. ‘Fearless Girl’ statue appears on Wall Street for International Women’s Day
A bronze statue of a little girl standing appeared in front of the famous charging bull on New York’s Wall Street just in time for International Women’s Day on March 8. The statue is a temporary fixture but over 8,000 people have signed an online petition calling for the ‘Fearless Girl’ to remain in her spot.

3. Canada ranked #1 country in the world for Quality of Life
If you didn’t know already, Canada has been named the #2 best country in the world for the second straight year.
Well, we’ve also been named as the #1 country in the world in 2017 for Quality of Life.
The study, conducted by U.S. News in partnership with Y&R’s BAVand Wharton, broke 80 countries’ overall rankings down by identifying a “set of 65 country attributes – terms that can be used to describe a country and that are also relevant to the success of a modern nation.”
When the inaugural list of the world’s best countries was released last year at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Canada was also named the #1 country in the world for Quality of Life, the study’s third most heavily weighted category.
In 2017, Canada beat out Sweden, Denmark, Australia, and Norway who all finished in the Quality of Life top 5.

4. Donald Trump revises travel ban
US President Donald Trump announced a revised version of his travel ban on Monday. The new executive order prohibits immigration from six Muslim-majority countries, exempting Iraq from the ban. Citizens from Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen will not be able to obtain visas for 90 days. Refugees from these countries will not be allowed to enter the US for 120 days. The new order comes into effect on March 16.

On International Women’s Day, the government of Canada announced a $650 million investment in funding for sexual and reproductive health and rights for women and girls around the world.
The move is being made as part of Canada’s effort to demonstrate its commitment to gender equality through “a feminist lens” as well as to take on a global leadership role in championing these rights.
Minister of International Development and La Francophonie, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, along with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, announced the $650 million investment that will be spread over three years.
The aim of the investment is to “promote gender equality and empower women and girls around the world by addressing the gaps in sexual and reproductive health and rights.”

6. One man arrested after 7 injured axe attack at German train station
One man has been arrested after injuring seven people with an axe at a German train station in Düsseldorf on Thursday. According to authorities, the 36-year-old man from the former Yugoslavia had mental health problems. Three of the victims suffered serious injuries.

7. Malta’s famous rock formation featured in Game of Thrones crashes into the ocean
Malta’s famous rock formation known as the Azure Window has collapsed into the sea. The structure’s fall was caused by heavy storms. Prime Minister Joseph Muscat called the news “heartbreaking.” The famous limestone structure was featured in several movies and TV shows, including HBO’s Game of Thrones.

An anti-immigration rally in Naples, Italy, turned violent on Saturday. Riot police were called to the scene to calm the violence. Police used tear gas and water cannons on the protesters.
The protesters were a violent sect of a peaceful group, demonstrating against Matteo Salvini and his anti-immigrant stance.

9. Damascus bombing kills 40

A twin bomb attack in Damascus, Syria, killed 40 Iraqis and wounded 120, according to the Iraq government. The bombings took place near Bab al-Saghir cemetery. Shia pilgrims arriving at the cemetery by bus were the targets of the attack.
