On Wednesday, June 14, you can wear your best outfit and have an amazing time at the Gear To Give fundraiser in aid of Working Gear.

The second-annual event is being held at the Contemporary Art Gallery on Nelson Street and will feature an evening of food, wine, scotch, beer, plus networking. There will be a a live silent auction on the night where you can bid to win a suite for 14 people to a Vancouver Whitecaps game, a Deighton Cup VIP package at Hastings Racetrack this July, or subscription tickets to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

Working Gear is a volunteer-run not-for-profit that provides work related clothing, suits, and footwear to men re-entering the workforce – free of charge.

This year’s event is of greater importance than ever as heavy winter snowfall caused the roof of the organization’s facility to cave in during last December and January. A lot of their inventory was damaged including construction attire, suits, and footwear.

As a result, Working Gear searched for a new home for some time and recently signed a lease for new premises in the Downtown Eastside at 214-524 Powell Street. So, the organization is excited to be re-opening in mid-July.

The aim for this year’s event is to raise $50,000 to pay for the increased costs involved with the new larger and more central location, and to help hundreds more men re-enter the workforce.

You can help just by getting dressed up and attending the wonderful Gear To Give fundraiser. General admission tickets to the event cost just $60 or $40 with a donation of menswear or steel toe boots, and they can be purchased through Picatic.

There’s also the option to go for a general plus ticket for $70 with two complimentary drink tokens, or you can round up your workmates and opt for the corporate package which includes five tickets and 10 drink tokens.

The organization operates on a shoestring annual budget with low overhead expenses so they can ensure maximum impact for their supporters.

Last year more than 150 Vancouverites attended the event and raised a phenomenal $20,000 for Working Gear. With more than 200 guests expected to attend this year, you can anticipate an even bigger party at the gallery.
