A woman is dead after a hit-and-run in downtown Vancouver on Wednesday morning.

In a release, Vancouver Police said that just before 7 am they received “several” calls about a woman needing medical attention after she was struck by a van in the north lane of Pendrell Street near Bute Street.

She was rushed to hospital but died a short time later.

The van allegedly involved in the collision had already left the area but was found a short distance away.

The driver of the van, a 47-year-old man, has been taken into police custody and investigators are now piecing together exactly what happened in the incident.

The VPD noted that it is still “very early” in the investigation and said that at this point they have no other information to share about the driver or the deceased woman.

Officers will be at the site of the hit-and-run collecting evidence throughout the day.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident who hasn’t spoken with police yet is asked to call 604-717-2500.
