Their sophomore season has already been a memorable one. With one game left in the regular season, the Whitecaps have already punched their ticket to the post season. That team accomplishment is nice, but a few players are up for some MLS individual awards as well.
Leading the way, in nominations and on the pitch, is Whitecaps FC captain Jay DeMerit. Coming off of a season that saw considerable time on the injured list, DeMerit has been an anchor in the backfield for the Whitecaps all season. His hard work has paid off. He is up for the following awards:
Whitecaps FC star Young-Pyo Lee has surprised many with his play this season in Vancouver. With a staggering 2,880 minutes of playing time under his belt this season, the defender’s hard work and determination has won him fans not only in Vancouver, but across the league. Lee is up for the following awards:
Rounding out the Whitecaps FC award nominees is Darrn Mattocks. The 2nd overall pick in last year’s MLS SuperDraft has done everything in his power to justify why the Whitecaps FC chose him. In 20 appearances, Mattocks has tallied 7 goals and one assist. Mattocks is nominated for the following award:
We hear athletes always say “the individual awards are nice, but we want a championship”. That old adage likely rings true with this trio of Whitecaps players. You can see the three of them try to solidify their individual awards in the Whitecaps FC’s final regular season match on Saturday when hey face Real Salt Lake. After that match, it is all about the MLS Cup.
