It was quite an interesting evening for fans of the Vancouver Whitecaps. The ‘Caps defeated the Chicago Fire 2-1 thanks to a pair of strikes by Blas Pérez, but during the match social media was running wild with trade rumours.

Ives Galarcep broke the news that the ‘Caps and Crew were finalizing a deal involving Octavio Rivero and Kei Kamara.

In theory the deal would make a lot of sense. Rivero has only scored 11 goals in 44 matches for the Whitecaps, and has not lived up to fans’ lofty expectations as one of Vancouver’s highly paid designated players. Kamara scored 22 goals for Columbus last season, second most in MLS.

Kamara lashed out at teammate Federico Higuain after the 4-4 draw against the Montreal Impact last weekend. During the match Kamara and Higuain squabbled over who should take a penalty kick.

After the match Kamara went on a prolonged rant about Higuain and called his teammate “selfish” for taking the penalty kick. Columbus head coach and sporting director Gregg Berhalter was unimpressed with Kamara and suspended him for this Saturday’s match against the Colorado Rapids.

Kamara, however, made one suggestive tweet that maybe he was on his way to Vancouver:

As the evening went on news began to surface that there was no deal:

Major League Soccer’s primary transfer window closed at 10 p.m. Pacific Time on Wednesday night. Deals that were negotiated before the window closed could still be completed, but that doesn’t appear to be the case with Rivero and Kamara.

*Update:

Was there a trade in the works between the Whitecaps and the Crew? We’ll never know for certain, but it made for an interesting couple of hours.

At least we can enjoy that Pérez bicycle kick goal again. And again. And again…
