RJR Sports in Jamaica is reporting that unsettled Vancouver Whitecaps striker Darren Mattocks has been traded to the Portland Timbers. Details of the reported move are not known at this time.

Mattocks has been linked with a move to Portland several times in recent years. If a deal with Portland has indeed been reached then Mattocks will be reunited with head coach Caleb Porter. Mattocks played for Porter for two years at the University of Akron and won a NCAA Division I Soccer Championship in 2010.

In four seasons with the Whitecaps, Mattocks, who was picked 2nd overall by the Whitecaps in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft, scored a total of only 19 goals, 7 of which came in his 2013 rookie season.

While Mattocks has been playing well and scoring for Jamaica in recent months, his inconsistent form for the Whitecaps coupled with a relatively high salary (believed to be in the neighbourhood of $272,000 in 2015) has been a recurring source of frustration for fans.

With the Whitecaps signing strikers Masato Kudo and Blas Pérez over the winter, it is fair to assume that Mattocks had fallen down the depth chart and most likely would have been fighting for a seat on the substitutes bench rather than a starting job here in Vancouver.
