UPDATE, Friday, May 1: The 16-year-old boy has now been charged with attempted murder of a 59-year-old female victim.

A 16-year-old West Vancouver resident is in custody and being investigated for attempted murder following a ‘severe assault.’

According to West Vancouver Police, officers responded to reports of an assault-in-progress incident late Tuesday afternoon at an apartment building located in the 2000-block of Bellevue Avenue.

When officers arrived, they quickly found and arrested the teenager without incident.

The 59-year-old female victim, an immediate family member of the suspect, escaped the attack with the help of a friend and was later brought safely to police headquarters. She suffered extensive bruising and abrasion injuries from the violent attack.

Police were originally investigating the incident as an alleged assault, but after combing through the evidence the investigation was upgraded to attempted murder. The suspect used a weapon in the alleged assault.

The identity of the suspect has been withheld as the individual is underage, but police are recommending a number of charges such asĀ attempted murder, assault with a weapon and uttering threats.

The suspect is currently being held at Burnaby’s Youth Detention Centre where a psychiatric examination is to be undertaken before an appearance at North Vancouver Provincial Court on Friday.
