Massive explosions were seen at a South Richmond film set for War For the Planet Of The Apes, the latest sequel to the reboot of the apocalyptic Apes film series.
But it was all planned as part of an elaborate sequence for the film. On Tuesday afternoon, fireballs rose high into the sky from the set, which is modelled as a war-torn prison.
Crews have been at the set at a vacant site next to Richmond Entertainment Centre, where SilverCity and Watermania are located. Giant inflatable green screens enclose the set.
The third instalment of the series is directed by Matt Reeves and stars Andy Serkis, Steve Zahn, Judy Greer, and Woody Harrelson. Filming will end in early-March 2016 and the movie will be released in theatres on July 14, 2017.
The first two films, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, were both filmed in British Columbia. Combined, the reboot films have grossed nearly $1.2 billion worldwide.
