Vancouver’s on-again, off-again retailer Pirate Joe’s is the subject of a new episode on popular podcast Startup. The podcast is about an inside look at “what it’s really like to get a business off the ground” and was the first series from podcast network Gimlet Media.

The episode follows Pirate Joe’s creator, Michael Hallat, on a secretive supply run to Trader Joe’s locations over the border. Costumes, fast-talking strategies and hired help are all part of how Hallat acquires Trader Joe’s goods for Vancouverites craving Speculoos Cookie Butter and Rosemary Marcona Almonds.

The episode, called ‘Pirate Needs Pirate,’ is a timely move as Pirate Joe’s gears up at their new location in Point Grey.
