Vancouver Police are investigating a late night sexual assault in the city’s Westside neighbourhood.

According to a release, the incident occurred at approximately 11 p.m. Friday when a woman walking near West 48th Avenue and Oak Street was grabbed from behind by a stranger.

The woman successfully fought him off and ran away to safety. In the ordeal, she was not physically injured by the attacker.

However, police were unable to locate the man during their extensive search, which involved the use of a police dog and helicopter throughout the night. No witnesses have been found and CCTV footage in the area obtained by police does not capture the suspect.

The suspect is described by the witness as a man who is between 5’8″ and 5’10” tall with a medium build.

“Unfortunately due to the circumstances, she was not able to provide a detailed description,” reads a statement by police.

Police are saying the attack appears to be sexual in nature and are advising women to be extra cautious. Anyone with information that could assist investigators is asked to contact the Vancouver Police at 604-717-0603.

About two hours later, police were also deployed to Sexsmith Elementary School located two kilometres away to investigate reports of a shooting. A 21-year-old man incurred a non-life threatening gunshot wound.
