A student with the University of British Columbia has died in a crash that occurred in a residential neighbourhood in Vancouver’s West Point Grey neighbourhood.

In a release, Vancouver Police confirmed they are investigating a single-vehicle crash that happened today just before 1 am at the intersection of West 16th Avenue and Discovery Street.

The 21-year-old man was driving a white Mercedes sedan on the eastbound direction of West 16th Avenue, lost control, left the roadway, and crashed into a tree.

He died at the scene and was the only occupant of the vehicle.

The Vancouver Police Department’s Collision Investigation Unit are at the scene and have closed West 16th Avenue between Trimble Street and Courtenay Street to conduct their investigation.

Eastbound bus routes No. 25 and 33 that normally travel on West 16th Avenue are currently taking detours via West 10th Avenue between Blanca Street and Alma Street.

At this early stage of the investigation, it appears speed was a factor.

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to call the VPD at 604-717-3012.
