We’re still a year away from the system wide implementation of fare gates. Until then transit police & transit security will be out in full force checking for fare evaders. Those without a valid ticket in a ‘fare paid zone” will face stiffer penalties starting today, Tuesday, September 4, 2012.

The new penalties for not having a valid fare in a fare paid zone are:

  • $173 fine.
  • If unpaid it jumps to $213 after 180 days and $273 after a full year.
  • Outstanding fines may mean unsolicited calls from a collection agency.
  • ICBC may refuse to issue or renew a driver’s licence or vehicle insurance.

Those without vehicles and phones can still get away without paying the fine. For those that wish to dispute the infraction you can visit www.translink.ca/fareinfraction.
