A local feminist collective is planning a rally outside of the CBC building in downtown Vancouver Wednesday night to show support for the women involved in the Jian Ghomeshi trial.
A verdict is set to come down tomorrow in the trial which saw three women alleging Ghomeshi sexually assaulted them between 2002 and 2003.
“It was very important to us today, before the judgement comes, to tell the women, no matter what the judge will decide, we believe you, we know you were telling the truth,” Vancouver Rape Relief spokeswoman Hilla Kerner tells Vancity Buzz.
Kerner says it’s important to show support for these women because too often, alleged victims are the ones put on trial in cases like these.
“We think the fact that they tried to seek justice through the criminal justice system was very important in sending a very bold message to other women and to men who attack women, that women will not be silent and women will not tolerate sexist attacks.”
She adds that Vancouver Rape Relief receives 1,200 calls per year and very few of those cases ever go to court.
