A distraught man lit himself on fire at a McDonald’s in Vancouver on Thursday evening.

According to the VPD, just after 9 pm on Thursday evening, a distraught man in his 30s entered a McDonald’s near Commercial Drive and East Broadway Avenue, carrying a gasoline can, threatening to harm himself.

Police say they negotiated with the man, who was threatening to light himself on fire.

“Negotiations with the man were unsuccessful, and he lit himself and parts of the restaurant on fire,” said the VPD in a release.

Officers used less-lethal “Arwen” rounds to subdue him, and members from Vancouver Fire and Rescue used a high pressure water hose on the man.

The man was taken to hospital with serious burn injuries, and the restaurant sustained some property damage.

The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is now investigating the incident.
