An early-morning police chase that began in downtown Vancouver ended in a crash on the other side of the inner harbour in the Vancouver Westside, temporarily shutting down a major artery.

Staff Sergeant Randy Fincham, the Media Officer for the Vancouver Police Department, told Daily Hive that police were called to the area of Harwood and Burrard streets at approximately 4 am after the owner of a pick-up truck witnessed someone stealing his vehicle.

Upon arriving in the area, police located the truck driving southbound over the Burrard Street Bridge and followed it to the intersection of Granville and West 16th Avenue, where it crashed into an SUV. The truck was subsequently boxed in by a number of police vehicles.

Fincham says one suspect was arrested at the scene of the crash while another suspect who ran from the scene was arrested with the help of the VPD K-9 Unit.

The driver of the SUV incurred minor injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Both directions of Granville Street were temporarily closed until approximately 7:30 am, but West 16th Avenue has reopened at the time of writing. Drivers are advised to avoid the area while police conduct their investigation.
